Samarkand in April to June: weather trade-offs, crowds and what to book first

April is green and showery (15.2C, 63mm rain), May is the sweet spot (20.4C), June turns hot and dry (25.4C, afternoons at 32C+). How to time Samarkand and what sells out first.

April to June is Samarkand's classic window, but the three months are three different trips. The numbers below are the WMO 1991-2020 climate normals for Samarkand (station 38696, 724m elevation), so they describe the typical year, not a forecast.

April: green, mild, occasionally wet

April averages 15.2C - daytime highs near 21.5C, nights down to 9.8C - with 62.9mm of rain, the city's second-wettest month. The pay-off is Samarkand at its most beautiful: gardens green, crowds building but manageable, and the Registan photogenic in soft light. Carry a compact umbrella and a light jacket for evenings; rain tends to arrive in bursts rather than all-day washouts.

May: the sweet spot

May averages 20.4C (highs near 27.1C) with rainfall dropping to 40mm. This is the best all-round month - warm enough for evening strolls to the 21:00 Registan music show, cool enough for midday sightseeing. It is also the most popular, so the two things that sell out first - Afrosiyob train seats from Tashkent and well-located Registan-side hotels - need booking 3-4 weeks ahead, sometimes more around Indian holiday weekends.

June: hot, dry, quieter

June averages 25.4C with highs of 32.5C and almost no rain (6.8mm). The trade: crowd levels drop and prices ease, but midday sightseeing needs planning - sights by 10:00, long lunch and hotel rest, back out at 17:00. With senior parents, June demands the afternoon-break discipline our 3-day itinerary builds in; April-May is kinder if your dates are flexible.

What to book first

In order: (1) Afrosiyob seats - the Tashkent-Samarkand trains are few and fast and economy (UZS 311,000) goes first, see our transport guide; (2) a hotel within walking distance of the Registan, since the good boutique properties are small; (3) the Uzbekistan e-visa ($20, allow a week of buffer though it usually takes about 3 working days). Sights themselves need no advance booking. For the full cost picture, the Samarkand budget guide has the numbers.
