Busan opens Korea's spring: the country's first cherry blossoms pop here around March 25 (VISITKOREA's 2026 forecast, from Weatheri data), a week ahead of Seoul. But the three spring months behave very differently, and the trade-off is real - the prettiest fortnight is also the most crowded, and the warmest month is not the driest. Here is each month honestly, then the booking order.
March: blossoms at the finish line, winter at the start
Average 9.1C with 89.6mm of rain (JMA climate normals for Busan). Early March still feels like a cold-weather trip - coat, layers, the works. The turn comes in the last week: blossoms were forecast for about March 25 in 2026, two to seven days earlier than average, with full bloom roughly a week later. The famous Jinhae Gunhangje Festival, an hour from Busan, ran March 27 to April 5 in 2026 (official festival dates) - the single busiest blossom event in the region, and the reason late-March weekends sell out.
April: peak pretty, peak rain
Average 13.7C - genuinely pleasant walking weather - but 140.9mm of rain makes it the wettest of the three spring months. Pack a compact umbrella and one waterproof layer and it barely matters; rain days are when you do the markets and spa. Full bloom lands in the first week, so the postcard window is roughly the last March week into early April. Crowds peak with the flowers: Gamcheon alone drew more than 3 million visitors in 2025 (Saha-gu), and blossom weekends concentrate everyone at Oncheoncheon and Dalmaji Hill. Go to the famous blossom spots on weekday mornings; keep weekends for Haeundae's wide promenade, which absorbs crowds easily.
May: the sweet spot before summer
Average 17.9C, 154.3mm of rain - warm enough for evening beach walks, still short of June's 188.4mm and the sticky monsoon. The blossoms are gone and so are the blossom crowds; hotel availability loosens and the city feels local again. If your dates are flexible, mid-May is the value window: spring warmth, off-peak prices, and the beaches open without the summer crush.
What to book first
In order: (1) hotels for the last March weekend and the Jinhae festival window - Busan's average room runs 76,000 won but the good-value Seomyeon and Gwangalli stock goes first (see the Busan budget guide for area-by-area prices); (2) Jinhae day-trip transport for festival dates - trains and tours to Jinhae sell out on peak weekends; (3) Haeundae Sky Capsule sunset slots, which open at 07:00 on Tuesdays four weeks out (booking mechanics in the 3-day itinerary); (4) everything else can wait - the metro, markets and temples need no booking at all. Coming from Seoul? The Seoul to Busan guide covers KTX timing - spring weekend seats go fast too.
