Seoul to Busan: flight, train and road combinations that actually make sense

Three real ways between Seoul and Busan: the KTX at 54,400 won in under three hours, a 65-minute flight that rarely wins door to door, and the express bus for the stubbornly frugal. The honest comparison, with booking rules that catch visitors out.

Seoul to Busan is Korea's busiest corridor, and the choice looks harder than it is. Three options genuinely exist - train, flight, bus - but for most travellers the decision takes about a minute once you see the door-to-door maths. Here is each one with current 2026 fares and the booking rules that trip up first-timers.

KTX: the default, and it earned it

Since the KTX-SRT merger of September 1, 2026 there is one high-speed brand and one booking system, and the Seoul-Busan standard fare dropped to 54,400 won (first class 78,900; from Suseo on the Gangnam side, 52,900). Korail's November 2026 timetable runs 49 trains a day from Seoul Station: the fastest takes 2 hours 18 minutes, the typical run about 2 hours 44. You arrive at Busan Station with Metro Line 1 two minutes away on foot. Two traps: there is no Busan KTX from Yongsan (a common wrong-station mistake), and tickets open exactly two months ahead at 07:00 Korea time on korail.com or the KORAIL+ app - weekend and holiday trains sell out, so set an alarm. Teens and young adults get 10-40% off; a KORAIL PASS (from 131,000 won for two days) makes sense only if you are chaining cities. Slower conventional trains exist too: the ITX-Saemaeul covers the 444 km in 4 hours 28 minutes for less money, worth it only if KTX seats are gone.

Flight: fast in the air, slow on the ground

About 19 weekday flights link Gimpo (Seoul's closer airport) to Gimhae, scheduled at 65 minutes. The catch is everything around the flight: AREX or subway to Gimpo (23+ minutes from Seoul Station), check-in closing 30 minutes before departure, then Gimhae's light rail into Busan - about 30 minutes to Seomyeon, 50 to Gwangalli, 70 to Haeundae. Door to door you are rarely under four hours, and often behind the KTX you could have caught. The flight wins in two narrow cases: you are already near Gimpo, or you are connecting internationally through Gimhae. Otherwise treat it as a tiebreaker, not a plan.

Express bus: the budget holdout

Premium, deluxe and regular coaches run from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Gyeongbu side) and Dong Seoul to Busan's Nopo terminal beside Line 1 - expect four hours or more depending on traffic, with fare ceilings that rose 9% on October 1, 2026 (check Kobus for the current number). The bus undercuts even the discounted KTX only meaningfully for last-minute solo travellers; for families the savings evaporate per seat and the KTX's legroom wins the comfort vote. The one bus case that makes sense: sold-out trains on a holiday weekend, when a premium-class night coach beats no trip at all.

The verdict for Indian travellers

Book the KTX the day sales open, from Seoul Station, at a mid-morning hour that lands you in Busan for a late lunch on Haeundae's promenade. That is the combination that actually makes sense. The bigger Seoul-or-Busan question is settled in our Seoul vs Busan comparison, the flight into Korea in our Delhi to Seoul flights guide, and the full trip's costs in the budget guide.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

What is the best way from Seoul to Busan?

The KTX: since the September 1, 2026 merger the standard fare is 54,400 won (first class 78,900; from Suseo 52,900). Korail runs 49 daily trains from Seoul Station - the fastest takes 2 hours 18 minutes, typical about 2 hours 44; Busan Station has Metro Line 1 two minutes away on foot. Tickets open exactly two months ahead at 07:00 Korea time on korail.com or the KORAIL+ app - weekend and holiday trains sell out. Note: no Busan KTX leaves from Yongsan.

Does flying from Seoul to Busan make sense?

Rarely. About 19 weekday flights link Gimpo to Gimhae at 65 scheduled minutes - but add the trip to Gimpo (23+ minutes from Seoul Station), check-in closing 30 minutes before departure, and Gimhae's light rail into the city (Seomyeon about 30, Gwangalli 50, Haeundae 70 minutes) and door to door you are rarely under four hours. Fly only if you are already near Gimpo or connecting internationally through Gimhae.

When do the bus or slower trains beat the KTX?

Express buses run from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Gyeongbu side) and Dong Seoul to Nopo in three seat classes over 4+ hours; fare ceilings rose 9% on October 1, 2026 (check Kobus for current fares). The bus only meaningfully saves money for last-minute solo travellers. The ITX-Saemaeul conventional train covers the 444 km in 4 hours 28 minutes for less - worth it when KTX seats are gone. On a sold-out holiday weekend, a premium night coach beats no trip.
