Seoul to Jeju: flight, train and road combinations that actually make sense

There is no train or road to Jeju - it is an island - and the Gimpo shuttle is the world's busiest domestic air route for a reason. When to fly Gimpo, when Incheon, who the ferry actually suits, and the fare traps.

First, the fact that settles most of this page: there is no train or road to Jeju. It is an island with no bridge or tunnel to the mainland, so every "combination" ends in either a flight or a ferry. For almost everyone, the answer is the Gimpo-Jeju shuttle - widely cited as the world's busiest domestic air route, with flights every 15-30 minutes through most of the day and about an hour in the air.

Fly from Gimpo, not Incheon (usually)

Gimpo is Seoul's domestic hub, 20-30 minutes from central Seoul by subway (AREX or Line 5/9) or taxi; Incheon, the international gateway, is 60-plus minutes out and has far fewer Jeju flights. Gimpo's frequency makes it forgiving - miss one flight and another leaves within the half hour. Incheon makes sense in exactly one case: you land internationally and connect to Jeju the same day, skipping the city entirely. (One visa nuance: flying directly from an international origin into Jeju qualifies many nationalities for Jeju's own 30-day visa-free entry, separate from mainland rules - routing through a mainland airport means entering under mainland rules instead, so check which applies to your passport before locking the routing.)

Fares and the baggage trap

Booked two to four weeks ahead on a normal weekday, LCC one-way fares typically land at 40,000-70,000 won (roughly Rs 2,800-4,900 at about Rs 70 per 1,000 won); full-service carriers and last-minute bookings run 80,000-150,000+ (jeju-escape's 2026 fare guide). The six carriers split into full-service (Korean Air, Asiana) and low-cost (Jeju Air, Jin Air, T'way, Air Seoul), and on a one-hour flight the LCC is usually the single biggest money-saver. Three checks before paying: LCC "basic" fares frequently exclude checked baggage and adjacent seating - a family of four with bags can find the cheap fare is not cheap at all; fares spike around Seollal, Chuseok and summer weekends, sometimes doubling; and international booking sites sometimes miss the cheapest Korean LCC inventory, so cross-check the airline's own site or a Korean platform. Typhoons and strong winds disrupt Jeju flights mainly from late August through September - the shuttle frequency means a cancelled flight usually rebooks within an hour or two, but build slack into those weeks.

The ferry: a feature, not a shortcut

Ferries to Jeju leave from southern mainland ports - Mokpo, Wando and a few others - not from Seoul. From Seoul you would ride the KTX or a bus south for several hours first, and the combined KTX-plus-ferry trip is slower and usually no cheaper than flying. The ferry makes sense in one scenario: you are already touring the south - say Busan, then the coast - and want the sea crossing as part of the trip. Pairing Busan and Jeju is the natural version of this, and our Busan vs Jeju comparison has the Busan-Jeju flight numbers (from 29,200 won, 1 hour 3 minutes) if you would rather fly that leg too. Seoul-side ground rules live in the Seoul to Busan guide, and the Seoul vs Busan comparison helps if Jeju is competing with either city for your days.
