- 5+ days: do both
Every Indian family planning Korea hits this fork: Seoul, Busan, or both. The cities are genuinely different trips - Seoul is vertical, electric and museum-rich; Busan is coastal, spread out and noticeably calmer. The good news is that since September 2026, doing both got cheaper. Here is the honest side-by-side.
Pace and feel
Seoul runs at Delhi speed with better queues: subways every few minutes, palaces between skyscrapers, markets that peak after dark. Busan, Korea's second city and main port (3.4 million people), runs a gear lower - hills falling into the sea, harbour light, and Haeundae and Gwangalli beaches that no Seoul riverbank can match. Families with small kids or seniors usually find Busan days physically easier; teens and shoppers vote Seoul. Both have excellent cheap metros (1,500-2,000 won a ride).
Sights: different strengths
Seoul wins on culture: Gyeongbokgung and four more palaces, the National Museum, N Seoul Tower, Insadong. Busan wins on nature and open space: seven public beaches along 40 km of coast, the Gamcheon Culture Village's painted hillside lanes, Haedong Yonggungsa - a temple on sea cliffs that is unlike anything in the capital - and the famous Jagalchi fish market. For day trips, Seoul has Suwon and the DMZ; Busan has Gyeongju, the Silla-dynasty UNESCO city 50 minutes away, arguably the best single day trip in Korea.
Food and the vegetarian question
Both cities are tougher for vegetarians than Indians expect, but the strategy from our veg food guide works in both: temple food, sanchae bibimbap, tofu houses and gimbap. Seoul has more vegetarian-labelled restaurants; Busan's pride is seafood (dwaeji gukbap pork soup and grilled fish are the local signatures), which matters if your family eats fish and not at all if it does not. Non-veg families eat brilliantly in both.
Budget and the KTX maths
Busan is cheaper: accommodation runs 10-20% below Seoul for comparable quality (the Haeundae resort zone excepted), and the best sights - beaches, coastal walks, markets - are free. The link between them: KTX from Seoul Station in about 2 hours 15 minutes, and since the KTX-SRT merger of September 1, 2026 the standard fare is 54,400 won, down from 59,800 (Korail via Seoul Economic Daily), with teens (13-24) at 10-30% off and 25-33-year-olds at 10-40% off. A family of four does the intercity leg for under 2,00,000 won.
The verdict
Four days or fewer: Seoul only - the variety justifies the buzz. Five to seven days: add Busan for two nights; the KTX fare drop and cheaper hotels make it nearly free against the budget, and the beach day is the one your kids will retell. Ten days: Seoul-Busan-Gyeongju is the golden triangle. Sort flights first with our Delhi to Seoul flights guide, then pace the days with the 3-day Seoul itinerary and the budget guide.
