Can You Buy an Extra-Legroom Seat at the Airport After Booking a Basic Fare?

Yes. A cheap fare does not lock you out of the good seats - IndiGo sells Seat Select, including XL rows, online after booking and at the airport itself, subject to what is still unsold. What changes at the airport is the price tier and the inventory. Here is how to actually land the legroom.

Short answer: yes. IndiGo's own add-ons page says passengers can book specific seats 'through our website or at the airport' - a basic or Saver fare excludes a free seat choice, but it never blocks a paid one. Extra-legroom (XL) seats are part of the same Seat Select inventory. So the saver-fare ticket you bought in a sale can absolutely end with you stretching out in row 12 - if an XL seat is still unsold when you ask, and you pay the going rate for it.

The honest trade-off: price versus certainty. Booking the seat early online does two things the airport cannot: it shows the full unsold map, and it locks the seat before other passengers take it. XL rows are the first to go on full flights - they are bought by tall travellers, families who figured out the value, and corporate bookers. By airport day, on a busy Delhi-Goa Friday evening, the honest answer may be 'sold out'. The airport route works best on off-peak flights and when you arrive early enough that the counter still has the whole unsold inventory to offer.

How to do it at the airport. At the check-in counter, simply ask: 'Is an extra-legroom seat available for purchase on this flight?' The agent sees the live seat map, quotes the price for your sector, and adds it to your booking on the spot - pay by card, and your boarding pass prints with the new seat. If the counter is crowded, the airline's airport ticketing office handles the same transaction. Ask before you check in your bag and clear security; seat sales happen airside of nothing, and the counter conversation is the whole process.

Two smarter alternatives worth checking first. One: IndiGo's 6E Upgrade bundle - ₹2,500 domestic, ₹3,000 international per passenger per flight - packs seat selection including extra legroom with free date changes and a snack, which can beat the standalone XL price on expensive sectors. Two: if you are travelling light on a flexible day, the value math sometimes favours paying for the seat online the evening before, when the remaining inventory and its prices are visible to you directly rather than quoted across a counter.

The exit-row asterisk. Many XL seats are emergency-exit rows, and those carry eligibility rules: IndiGo's Conditions of Carriage restrict exit seats to able-bodied passengers aged 15 and above who can understand and follow crew instructions and assist in an evacuation. Buy an exit-row XL seat for a passenger who does not meet the criteria - a young teen, an elderly parent with limited mobility - and the crew will move them out of it. Choose a non-exit XL row in that case; the legroom is the same, the rulebook stays closed.

How TripKeeper thinks about seat money. On our trips we treat seat selection as a comfort decision made at booking, priced against the flight's length and the traveller's knees - not an airport-day impulse. If you would like those calls handled for your family, send us a trip-planning inquiry.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Can I buy an extra-legroom seat at the airport on IndiGo?

Yes. IndiGo states that specific seats can be booked through its website or at the airport, and XL seats are part of that Seat Select inventory. At the check-in counter or ticketing office, ask for an extra-legroom seat - the agent quotes the sector price, adds it to your booking, and prints the new boarding pass, subject to availability.

Does booking a cheap or Saver fare stop me from buying a better seat later?

No. A basic fare excludes free seat selection, but it never blocks paid seat selection. You can buy Seat Select - including XL rows - any time after booking, online or at the airport, as long as the seats remain unsold. The fare class and the seat purchase are separate transactions.

Are extra-legroom seats more expensive at the airport than online?

The seat fee depends on the seat and sector; the real airport difference is inventory, not necessarily price. Online you see the full unsold map and can act early; at the airport you choose from whatever remains, which on full flights may be nothing. Off-peak flights and early airport arrival give the counter route its best odds.

What is IndiGo's 6E Upgrade and does it include legroom seats?

6E Upgrade is a bundle at ₹2,500 per passenger per flight domestic and ₹3,000 international that includes seat selection - extra legroom, window and aisle - plus unlimited free date changes and an inflight snack. On sectors where the standalone XL seat is pricey, the bundle can cost less than the seat alone while adding flexibility.

Can I buy an exit-row extra-legroom seat for my elderly parent?

No - exit rows are restricted. IndiGo's Conditions of Carriage limit emergency-exit seats to able-bodied passengers aged 15 and above who can comprehend crew instructions and assist in an evacuation. A senior with limited mobility does not qualify and would be moved. Pick a non-exit XL row instead; the legroom is comparable without the eligibility rules.

What if all XL seats are sold out when I reach the airport?

Then the answer is genuinely no for that flight - paid seats are finite inventory and XL rows sell first. Your fallbacks: ask the agent about any remaining preferred seats closer to the front, take the best free seat available, and next time buy the seat online as early as possible. Full flights reward early buyers, not early airport arrivals.
