Can you carry a digital thermometer in your IndiGo cabin bag?

Yes. A digital thermometer is a small battery-powered medical device and it clears security in your cabin bag without any approval - IndiGo in fact tells you to keep medication and electronics in the cabin, not in checked baggage. The thermometer that causes trouble is the old mercury one: it counts as dangerous goods, only one per person in a protective case, and it belongs in checked baggage.

Short answer: yes, freely. A digital thermometer - the battery-powered stick or infrared kind every home has now - is not a restricted item on IndiGo or any Indian carrier. It goes in your cabin bag through security like your phone or your watch, with no declaration and no airline approval needed.

Why the cabin is the right bag, not just an allowed one. IndiGo's dangerous-goods policy explicitly recommends that medication, fragile items and electronics travel in cabin baggage rather than checked baggage, and the airline takes no responsibility for them in the hold. A thermometer is exactly that combination: a medical device with a battery. Keep it with you - it survives the journey, and you have it if someone falls ill mid-trip.

Battery questions, answered. Digital thermometers run on tiny button cells or a small lithium battery that stays installed in the device. Batteries installed in equipment are treated far more leniently than loose spares under dangerous-goods rules, and a thermometer's cell is nowhere near the thresholds that trigger restrictions. You do not need to remove it, tape it, or declare it.

The thermometer that is a problem: mercury. Old glass mercury thermometers are treated as dangerous goods because mercury is corrosive to aircraft aluminium. The international rule (IATA) allows one small medical or clinical mercury thermometer per person, in its protective case, and it goes in checked baggage - not the cabin. Air India's restricted-items list permits a mercury thermometer in the cabin only for an authorised weather-bureau official carrying it for work. If you still own a mercury thermometer, leave it home and travel with a digital one.

Security screening in practice. You will not be stopped for a digital thermometer. It can stay in your bag through the X-ray like other small electronics; CISF does not flag it. If you carry a larger medical kit - a nebuliser, an oximeter, a BP monitor - the same logic holds: battery-powered personal medical devices are fine in the cabin, and carrying basic medication with them is sensible.

One related liquid rule worth remembering. The thermometer itself is solid, but fever medication usually is not. Syrups and gels in the cabin fall under the 100 ml liquids rule on international sectors, so pack full-size bottles in checked baggage and keep only small doses in the cabin.

How TripKeeper helps. Packing rules are small until they cost you a medicine kit at security. When we plan your trip, we give you a packing brief matched to your airline and route - what goes in the cabin, what goes in the hold, what to leave behind. Send us a trip-planning inquiry and pack once, correctly.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Can I carry a digital thermometer in cabin baggage on IndiGo?

Yes. A digital thermometer is a battery-powered medical device, not a restricted item. It goes through security in your cabin bag with no declaration or approval. IndiGo recommends keeping medication and electronics in the cabin rather than checked baggage.

Do I need to remove the battery from a digital thermometer before flying?

No. Thermometer button cells and small installed lithium batteries are treated as batteries contained in equipment, which are freely allowed. Do not remove, tape or declare anything.

Is a mercury thermometer allowed on a flight?

Mercury thermometers are dangerous goods. International rules allow one per person in a protective case, packed in checked baggage - not the cabin. Air India permits a mercury thermometer in the cabin only for authorised weather officials. Travel with a digital thermometer instead.

Will CISF stop me for a thermometer at security?

No. A digital thermometer passes through the X-ray inside your bag like any small electronic device. Other battery-powered personal medical devices - oximeters, BP monitors, nebulisers - are equally fine in the cabin.

Can I carry fever syrup with the thermometer in my cabin bag?

Only in containers of 100 ml or less on international flights, inside your liquids bag. Full-size medicine bottles belong in checked baggage. The thermometer itself has no liquid restriction.

Should the thermometer go in checked baggage or cabin?

Cabin. IndiGo explicitly recommends medication, fragile items and electronics travel in cabin baggage, and accepts no responsibility for them in the hold. A thermometer is both medical and electronic - keep it with you.
