Short answer: not through the app or website. Once your Vande Bharat e-ticket is booked, IRCTC offers no option to edit the catering choice on it - the meal preference you picked (or missed) at booking is what the system holds. In practice, though, you have three workable routes: ask the onboard catering staff, order restaurant food to your seat through e-catering, or simply buy onboard if you opted out.
Why people end up with the wrong meal in the first place. Since late 2025, the IRCTC website and app charge the full catering fare by default on Vande Bharat bookings. The 'I don't want Food/Beverages' choice no longer sits in the catering dropdown with veg, non-veg, Jain and diabetic options - it is a separate checkbox further down the passenger-details page. Miss it, and the catering charge stays in your fare. At reservation counters it is the reverse: you pay for food only if you tick the meal column on the form.
You paid for catering but want a different meal. Speak to the onboard catering staff or the catering manager as soon as the journey begins - before the first service. Veg-to-non-veg or Jain requests are handled at their discretion and depend on what has been loaded for that run, so the earlier you ask, the better your chances. There is no formal swap guarantee, so treat this as a request, not a right.
You opted out - or paid but do not want the train meal at all. If you skipped catering at booking, you can still buy food onboard, subject to availability - since the revised meal policy of 10 January 2024, passengers who opted out no longer pay an extra onboard catering charge over the listed prices. The better option for many: order through IRCTC e-Catering (ecatering.irctc.co.in or the app) and have restaurant food delivered to your seat at an enroute station. You pick the restaurant and the dish, which solves both the wrong-cuisine problem and the quality complaint in one step.
For your next booking, get it right at the source. On the passenger-details page, scroll past the meal preference dropdown and look for the separate 'I don't want Food/Beverages' checkbox before paying - the fare difference is real money on every ticket. If you do want the train meal, choose veg, non-veg, Jain or diabetic in the catering dropdown itself; that selection is what reaches the catering contractor's loading list.
How TripKeeper handles meals on train journeys. When we plan rail travel for families, dietary needs - Jain, diabetic, kids' meals, no-catering preferences - are confirmed at booking time, not left to onboard negotiation. If you would like your train journeys planned with that level of detail, send us a trip-planning inquiry.
