Changing the Date of a Confirmed Train Ticket: There Is No Edit Button, So Do This Instead

Indian Railways e-tickets cannot be modified - a date change means cancelling and rebooking, so the cancellation clock decides what it costs. The order of steps that keeps your money and your seat safe.

Short answer: you cannot edit the date on an Indian Railways e-ticket. IRCTC's own FAQ says it plainly - to prepone or postpone a journey, cancel the original ticket and book a fresh one. That makes a date change a money decision, not a settings tweak: what it costs you is exactly the cancellation slab you fall into, so the whole game is playing it early and in the right order.

First check the new date, then touch the old ticket. Before cancelling anything, check seat availability on the train and date you actually want. If the new date shows long waitlists, you may prefer to keep the confirmed seat you have - a confirmed ticket in hand often beats a hopeful waitlist three weeks later. Only when the new plan looks bookable should you cancel the old ticket.

The cost is the cancellation slab - so cancel early. Because a date change is really cancel-plus-rebook, the standard deductions apply: a confirmed ticket cancelled more than 72 hours before departure loses only the flat per-passenger charge (240/200/180/120/60 rupees by class, AC classes plus GST); inside 72 hours it is 25% of the fare; inside 24 hours, 50%; and inside 8 hours, nothing comes back. Moving a trip decided a week ahead costs a family a few hundred rupees; the same move the day before costs a quarter of the fare. If there is any chance the dates might move, booking early and deciding before the 48-hour mark is the cheapest insurance on Indian Railways.

Where each step happens. E-tickets are cancelled online - IRCTC site or app, Booked Ticket History - and the new ticket is booked the same way; the refund returns to the original payment method in a few working days. Counter-bought paper tickets go back across the reservation counter. Do the cancellation and the fresh booking in one sitting so dates, names and class all match the new plan - and re-check the new PNR the same evening.

Two traps worth naming. Tatkal: a confirmed Tatkal ticket gets no refund on cancellation at all, so changing a Tatkal date means writing off the fare - never book Tatkal for dates you are unsure of. And partial moves: if only some family members need a different date, IRCTC lets you cancel selected passengers on an e-ticket, so the rest of the family keeps the original booking untouched.

When not to change at all. If the train you are booked on gets cancelled or rescheduled by the railways, you are owed a full refund - do not rush to pay cancellation charges for a problem the railways created. And if your confirmed ticket is on a train that still runs but your plan slipped by a day, compare the 25-50% loss against simply travelling as booked: sometimes the cheapest date change is the one you do not make.

How TripKeeper handles moving plans. Family trips we plan are built with buffers - train legs booked early, decision points flagged before the 72-hour deadline, and no Tatkal gambles on uncertain dates. If a multi-city India itinerary needs the trains to flex with your leaves and school holidays, send us a trip-planning inquiry.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Can I change the date of a confirmed train ticket online?

No - Indian Railways e-tickets cannot be edited. IRCTC's official FAQ says the way to prepone or postpone is to cancel the original ticket and book a fresh one. The cancellation charges depend on when you cancel: flat 60-240 rupees per passenger beyond 72 hours, 25% of the fare within 72 hours, 50% within 24 hours, and no refund inside the last 8 hours. So an early date change is cheap; a late one costs half the fare.

Should I book the new ticket before cancelling the old one?

Check first, then cancel. Look at availability for your new date before touching the existing booking - if the new date shows long waitlists, keeping your confirmed seat is usually wiser. Once the new plan looks bookable, cancel the old ticket and book the new one in the same sitting, then re-check the new PNR that evening.

What does it cost to change a train ticket date?

Whatever the cancellation slab charges, because a date change is cancel-plus-rebook. Cancelled more than 72 hours before departure: a flat 240 (AC First/Executive), 200 (AC 2-Tier), 180 (AC 3-Tier/Chair Car), 120 (Sleeper) or 60 rupees (Second Class) per passenger, plus GST on AC classes. Inside 72 hours: 25% of the fare. Inside 24 hours: 50%. Inside the last 8 hours: no refund. The earlier you move the date, the less the move costs.

Can I change the date of a Tatkal ticket?

Only by sacrificing it - confirmed Tatkal tickets get no refund on cancellation, so a date change means losing the entire fare and booking again at full price. Never book Tatkal for dates you are unsure about; use it only when the travel day is locked.

Can I change the date for only some passengers on a family ticket?

Yes - IRCTC allows partial cancellation on e-tickets, so you can cancel selected passengers and rebook them on a new date while the rest of the family keeps the original booking. The same cancellation slabs apply to the cancelled passengers, based on when you cancel.

What if the railways reschedule my train instead?

Then do not pay to change anything. If the train is cancelled by the railways, e-tickets are refunded in full automatically. If the train is significantly rescheduled and the new time does not work for you, check the refund options for that situation before cancelling on your own - cancelling voluntarily costs the standard charges, while a railway-caused disruption does not.
