Short answer: open the booking in View/Change booking on IndiGo's site, choose the passenger who needs the extra weight, and attach a pre-paid excess baggage slab to that passenger and sector only. IndiGo's add-ons - meals, seats, pre-paid excess baggage - are special service requests added inside an existing booking, and pre-paid excess baggage can be booked on the website or through the call centre up to 1 hour before a domestic departure and 2 hours before an international one. The rest of the family's allowances stay untouched, and nobody pays for weight they do not use.
Why per-person matters. Baggage allowances on IndiGo are worded per passenger - 15 kg domestic per person - so excess weight is also settled per passenger. In practice, families discover the problem at the weighing scale at home: three bags at 13 kg and one at 22 kg. The fix is not four add-ons; it is one slab on the heavy bag's owner, plus a little redistribution. Ten minutes of repacking often halves the bill before any add-on is bought.
The exact flow. On goindigo.in, go to View/Change booking and retrieve the reservation with the six-letter PNR and last name or email. Inside, use the special-services option to add pre-paid excess baggage: select the passenger, select the sector, pick the slab, pay. The slab is then attached to that passenger's name for that flight leg. Rates are published in the Baggage Rates section of IndiGo's site and vary by route and slab, so check the current table there rather than relying on memory - pre-paid is significantly cheaper than the per-kg airport rate either way.
If the website flow gives trouble. The call centre can attach the same pre-paid slab to one passenger on a shared PNR - useful when the booking has multiple sectors or was made through an agent. There is also a bigger lever on the same page: Split PNR. If one traveller's baggage needs are wildly different - say, a student emigrating with the family - splitting them onto their own PNR makes every future change (baggage, dates, seats) cleaner. For an ordinary holiday, the simple add-on is enough.
Timing traps to avoid. The pre-paid window closes 1 hour before domestic and 2 hours before international departures - after that, only airport rates apply, and they are the expensive kind. Buy the slab the evening before, weigh bags again in the morning, and remember the per-piece ceiling: IndiGo caps a single checked piece at 23 kg, so a 20 kg slab cannot all ride in one 30 kg suitcase. Split it across two bags or stay under the cap.
How TripKeeper handles it. Before our trips we tell travellers which bag is likely to tip over the limit and whether an add-on or a repack is the cheaper fix - booked in advance, at pre-paid rates, on the right person's name. If you would like that done for your family's next flight, send a trip-planning inquiry.
