For a Colombo holiday starting in Chennai, check a non-stop Chennai (MAA) to Colombo (CMB) flight first. A train or car can get you to an Indian departure point, but the documented passenger ferry runs from Nagapattinam to Kankesanthurai near Jaffna, not from Chennai to Colombo. That alternative needs substantial travel on both shores. A sea crossing is not a teleport button.

The simple chain: Chennai airport, CMB, then your Colombo address
IndiGo's Chennai-Colombo page describes non-stop service, and SriLankan Airlines has a Chennai-Colombo booking page. Search your actual outbound and return dates. Compare the flight number, airports, baggage, arrival time, cancellation rules and the final payable total. We are not copying a headline “from” fare: SriLankan's page warns that displayed fares were collected earlier and may no longer be available, with optional charges possible.
CMB is Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake. The airport's aeronautical information identifies that location; it is not Colombo Fort station or your city hotel. Finish arrival formalities and baggage collection, then take the separately planned onward transfer. Do not book a paid city activity against the aircraft's scheduled landing time.
The airport's taxi page says supervised counters operate in the arrival lobby and arrival porch. It does not establish a verified fare to your specific address in this article. Ask for vehicle capacity with all bags, the destination, complete charge, extra stops, toll treatment and waiting terms. If using a bus, confirm where that service actually drops you. The ferry alternative arrives in northern Sri Lanka
India's shipping ministry records the Nagapattinam–Kankesanthurai passenger route and its restart with Sivagangai in August 2024. The Indian High Commission's 18 September 2026 release says financial support was extended for another year. That supports the route's institutional context, not proof of a sailing on your day.
For a Chennai-to-Colombo journey, the full sea-chain is: Chennai to Nagapattinam; port check-in and Indian exit formalities; a confirmed crossing to Kankesanthurai; Sri Lankan entry formalities; onward transport to Colombo; and the final hotel transfer. Price and time every link, including any necessary overnight stay. Do not compare only the boat fare with the whole flight journey.
Before paying, obtain the operator's travel-date sailing confirmation, exact ports, check-in deadline, baggage conditions, documents, cancellation/refund rules and weather decision. Confirm the Sri Lankan onward vehicle or a workable train with an actual seat and station transfer. No current ferry departure, seat, sea conditions or northern-line train reservation was established for this guide. A separately booked onward ticket does not make a delayed boat a protected connection.
Where train and road genuinely fit
Use them as ground legs to an airport or port, or as the onward journey after arrival. The verified ferry is a passenger sea segment between two named ports. The sources checked do not establish a through Chennai-Colombo train or a drive-through border option. Do not buy an itinerary described that way without a clear, independently verified transport chain.

For a short Colombo stay, adding two long ground legs simply to avoid a flight is a deliberate slow-travel choice, not an automatic shortcut.
Entry rules: use the immigration authority, not airline copy
The official ETA site currently states that eligible Indian nationals can obtain a free 30-day tourist ETA under the scheme effective 25 May 2026, and that ETA is required before arrival. Free does not mean no application. Apply through the official channel and verify the conditions for your nationality, passport and purpose.
Some airline destination copy still mentions visa on arrival. That does not override the current immigration authority. This matters for sea travel too: do not assume that an airport process is available at a port. Keep your approval and required travel documents accessible offline.
Choose the chain, then buy the tickets
- Short Colombo holiday: start with a date-specific non-stop MAA-CMB search and include the city transfer.
- Flight requires a connection: check whether it is one protected booking or separate tickets, along with baggage and transfer requirements. A lower headline fare may add a larger problem.
- Sea journey is part of the experience: choose it only after confirming the ferry and both ground legs, with slack for changes and any overnight costs.
- Travelling with parents: compare walking, luggage handling, queues, toilet access and the ability to rest at every handoff. Fewer handoffs can be worth more than a small fare difference.
Until the dated options and complete totals are in front of you, the sensible recommendation is a route preference, not a claim about the fastest available departure or cheapest ticket.
