Short answer: no charge for skipping web check-in on an IndiGo international flight. IndiGo's own check-in pages describe web check-in as free - 'complete your government-mandated web check-in for free' - and list airport counters as the normal alternative for international departures, closing 75 minutes before the flight, with no counter fee mentioned for international travel. The airport check-in fee that circulates in articles - ₹200, introduced on domestic bookings in 2021 - applies to domestic flights, not international ones. So if the family could not manage web check-in for the Bangkok flight, the counter will simply check them in.
What the international counter routine looks like. IndiGo asks international passengers to report at least four hours before departure, and the counters close 75 minutes before scheduled departure - a hard cutoff, because international processing stacks document verification on top of the usual baggage and security steps. At the counter, staff check passports and destination documents (visa, return ticket, whatever the destination demands) before issuing the boarding pass. None of this carries a fee; it carries a clock. Miss the 75-minute mark and the conversation is about rebooking, not check-in.
Why web check-in is still the better habit. Not because of a fee - because of the queue and the seat. Web check-in for international flights opens 24 hours before departure and runs until 75 minutes prior, and doing it early is how a family of four ends up seated together rather than scattered across the remaining singles. With web check-in done and only cabin bags, some airports let you bypass the counter entirely; with checked bags you use the faster bag-drop line instead of the full check-in queue. The fee debate misses the point - the real cost of skipping web check-in is twenty extra minutes in a line and worse seat leftovers.
The exceptions to know about. A few international bookings genuinely need the counter: passengers requiring document verification that the website flags, some codeshare itineraries (IndiGo notes personalised check-in assistance at the airport applies to codeshare bookings), travellers with special-service requests, and anyone whose web check-in errors out on passport or visa fields. If the website refuses your check-in, that is not a fee trap - it is the airline routing you to a document check, and the counter does it without charge.
The one real money trap nearby. What does cost money at the airport is not check-in - it is baggage. International excess baggage bought at the counter costs far more per kilo than pre-paid slabs bought online up to two hours before departure. The family that skipped the website entirely often discovers this together: no web check-in, no pre-paid baggage, and a counter bill that hurts. Do the online work for the bags even if you skip the seat selection.
How TripKeeper handles check-in day. On our trips, web check-in, seat grouping and pre-paid baggage are done the day before as part of the departure routine, so airport day is bag-drop and security, not queues and surprises. If you would like departures handled that way, send us a trip-planning inquiry.
