New Chitose is Hokkaido's front door, and the transfer is easier than the flight: the train station is inside the terminal. Here is every option with current fares, including a taxi change many older guides have not caught.
The train: fast, cheap, downstairs
JR Hokkaido's airport station sits on basement level B1 of the terminal - follow the multilingual signs from arrivals. Per JR Hokkaido, six Airport trains an hour run between 9:00 and 16:00: one Special Rapid (fastest 33 minutes), three Rapids (37 minutes) and two Semi-Rapids (43 minutes) to Sapporo Station. The fare is 1,150 yen one way; a reserved U-Seat costs 840 yen extra. Trains run from just after 8:00 to after 22:00 roughly every 12 minutes (Sapporo's official tourism site). Stay on until Sapporo Station - Shin-Sapporo, one stop earlier, is a common wrong exit.
The bus: for Odori and Susukino hotels
Chuo Bus and Hokuto Kotsu leave every 10 to 15 minutes from both terminals and take about 70 minutes to central Sapporo (sapporo.travel). Fares start around 1,300 yen. The case for the bus is luggage and location: it stops at major hotels in the Odori and Susukino districts, so with big bags or kids you skip the Sapporo Station shuffle entirely. In heavy snow, though, road times stretch while the train keeps its schedule.
Taxis: what changed in December 2025
Older guides quote flat airport fares - check the date. Navitime reports that major operators such as Hokuto Kotsu discontinued flat-rate airport fares in December 2025 (a few, like Sapporo MK, still offer them), so most taxis now run on the meter: roughly 15,000 to 19,000 yen for the about-60-minute ride to Sapporo Station, expressway tolls extra. Sapporo's official tourism site still quotes 10,000 to 13,000 yen metered plus tolls and fixed-price services from 7,000 yen with advance booking - treat the lower numbers as the pre-change baseline and confirm with your operator before you get in. For a family of four with ski bags at midnight, a booked transfer still makes sense; everyone else should take the train.
What to check before landing
Your arrival hour matters: after 22:00 the train thins out and the bus becomes the practical option. Your hotel's district decides train versus bus. And if you are continuing beyond Sapporo, JR Hokkaido runs some trains direct from the airport to Otaru. Flying in from Tokyo first?
