The Afrosiyob puts you at Samarkand railway station, and the Registan area - where most hotels cluster - is about 6km east, a 15-20 minute ride. The gap between what that ride should cost (UZS 20,000-30,000, about $2-3 on Yandex Go) and what you will be quoted at the exit ($10 and up) is the widest in Uzbekistan. Here is how to land on the right side of it.

Before the train pulls in

Have three things working before arrival: Yandex Go installed with a card added (Uber operates in Samarkand too, but Yandex Go has more cars), mobile data running, and UZS 100,000-150,000 in cash small notes from a Tashkent ATM. The station has no reliable public ATM queue when the Afrosiyob discharges 300 people at once. Screenshot your hotel's name and address in Uzbek or Russian - drivers go by address, not brand.

At the station

Samarkand's station is modern and the arrivals exit feeds a forecourt where unmarked drivers and touts work the crowd - travel-safety guides list the railway-station taxi mob as the city's number one tourist trap, quoting flat $10 or "no meter" prices for a ride worth a quarter of that. The rule: walk past anyone who approaches you, order Yandex Go from the app, and meet it at the marked pickup point. If data fails, use the official taxi desk inside the terminal and agree the exact price in som before stepping out.

The ride and the alternatives

The drive runs straight east into the new town and takes 15-20 minutes outside rush hour. Comfort class on Yandex Go adds a few thousand som and is worth it with parents and luggage. Local buses pass the station but are slow and crowded with suitcases - skip them on arrival day. If your hotel sits in the old town near the Registan, note some lanes are pedestrianised; the app drops you at the nearest vehicle point, a 2-5 minute walk.

Connecting onward

Samarkand airport is 5km north of the centre - if you fly in instead, the same rules apply: Yandex Go UZS 20,000-30,000 to the Registan area, ignore the approachers. For the wider route plan, our Tashkent-Samarkand transport guide compares train, flight and road, and the day-trip guide uses this exact arrival.

Screenshot your hotel's name and address in Uzbek or Russian; drivers read addresses, not brands.
