- Guwahati station, about 96 km

There is no train to Shillong on the official pages. Every sensible route ends with a road leg, and the question is where it starts.
1. The three starting points
| Start | What Meghalaya Tourism says | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Guwahati airport (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi) | About 100 km, 3 hours, to Shillong. The Shillong destination page says 119 km. | Two figures from the same body |
| Guwahati railway station | Nearest railhead, 96 km from Shillong. Taxis, shared cabs and buses run frequently. | Fares and timings not published |
| Shillong airport (Umroi) | 35 km from the centre on one page, 31 km on another. Limited flights. | Check live schedules before booking |
2. Combinations
- Fly into Guwahati, then taxi or shared cab to Shillong. The road is the National Highway between them (the pages call it NH40 and NH6).
- Train to Guwahati, then a cab or bus. This is the usual rail chain, since Guwahati is the railhead.
- Fly to Shillong's Umroi airport if a flight suits you. It saves the long road, but flights are limited.
3. Planning notes
- Count about 3 hours on the road and add buffer for traffic. No page gives a bus or cab fare.
- Carry a government-issued photo ID. Meghalaya Tourism says entry points follow standard protocols.
- Umiam Lake sits on this highway, so it is a natural stop.
4. Not published
Taxi and bus fares, train timings and current flight schedules are not on the official pages. Check the airline and railway apps for live times, and agree cab fares before you leave.
