- Do both?
- Yes, with 4+ nights, Hue first
Hoi An and Hue sit 130 km apart in central Vietnam and solve different problems. Hoi An gives you atmosphere: lantern-lit evenings, walkable streets, cafes and a beach nearby. Hue gives you depth: the Imperial Citadel, royal tombs and a slower, more serious heritage day. For most Indian families the honest default is Hoi An, with Hue added when the itinerary has the nights to protect it.
Pace: what a day feels like in each
Hoi An is the lower-friction base, especially with kids and grandparents. The old town core is flat and about 1.2 km end to end, closed to motorbikes for most of the day, and the best hours, early morning and lantern-lit evening, need no transport at all. An Bang Beach sits 4-5 km away for a recovery half-day. Hue asks more of a family: the Citadel and the royal tombs are spread out, exposed to the sun, and reward a guide. A comfortable Hue day usually means a private car, shade planning and a selective monument list rather than all seven tombs.
Budget: Hue is gentler on the wallet
Per VietnamGuide's 2026 comparison benchmarks, a mid-range hotel in Hue runs 500,000-850,000 VND a night against 800,000-1,600,000 VND for an old-town boutique in Hoi An, and Hue's food budget sits about 30% lower, with a bun bo Hue bowl at 35,000-45,000 VND next to Hoi An's cao lau at 40,000-50,000 VND. Tickets flip the balance a little: Hue's Citadel costs 200,000 VND and each royal tomb about 150,000 VND, so a serious monument day for four adds up fast, while Hoi An's old town ticket is 120,000 VND per person. Net: Hue is cheaper to sleep and eat in, pricier once you chase its full heritage list.
Travel between them
Two good options. The train from Hue to Da Nang takes about 2.5 hours on the spectacular cliffside track past the Hai Van coast; a soft seat costs 70,000-110,000 VND depending on the source, then a Grab from Da Nang to Hoi An adds 250,000-350,000 VND. Or take a private car over the Hai Van Pass in about 3 hours: one 2026 guide quotes 1,100,000-1,300,000 VND for the car, another 1,500,000-2,000,000 VND, so get a fresh quote before booking. Both figures are per car, not per person, which is where families win back the cost.
Which one, and when both
Choose Hoi An if your family wants slow evenings, easy food, short walks and a beach break. Choose Hue if imperial history is a shared family interest and you will book the guide and the car. Do both only with four or more central Vietnam nights, in the order Hue first, then Hoi An over the pass, so the trip moves from imperial weight to old-town release. With two or three nights, pick one; adding Hue as a lunch stop or Hoi An as one tired night flattens both.
If Hoi An wins, the Hoi An budget breakdown and weather and crowds guide take the planning further, and 3 days in Hoi An with parents is the ready-made slow version.
