Hoi An can be done on a backpacker budget or a boutique one, and both versions are good. The honest answer for most Indian couples: three comfortable days for two, excluding flights, come to roughly Rs 15,000 on a lean plan and about Rs 23,000 on a comfortable one (at roughly 300 VND to the rupee). Here is where the money actually goes.
Stay: the biggest line, still gentle
Well-rated homestays and small hotels within walking distance of the old town currently list from about 820,000-855,000 VND a night for two adults on Booking.com (about Rs 2,700-2,850), usually with breakfast, a pool and free bicycles included. Vietnam Tourism's national travel site puts the wider decent double-room range at 600,000-1,200,000 VND. Both figures describe the same market at different cuts: budget rooms start lower, boutique heritage hotels cost more, and prices firm up around the full-moon lantern nights and public holidays. Two nights at the mid point is roughly 1.7 million VND.
Food: cheap if you eat local
According to Vietnam Tourism's 2026 Hoi An budget guide, street dishes run 20,000-50,000 VND: cao lau 35,000-45,000 VND, banh mi 20,000-35,000 VND, com ga chicken rice 40,000-50,000 VND. A sit-down meal at a mid-range restaurant with a drink and fresh spring rolls costs 120,000-180,000 VND per person. A practical pattern for couples: one street lunch, one sit-down dinner, which puts food for two at roughly 600,000-1,000,000 VND a day depending on how many riverside coffees sneak in.
Getting there and around
Most couples arrive from Da Nang, 30 km away. A Grab car with a fixed fare runs about 305,000-350,000 VND including the platform fee, the airport shuttle bus costs 120,000 VND per person, shared minibuses start around USD 6 a seat, and public bus 02 costs just 30,000 VND. Inside the town, walking is free and bicycles often come with the room. Budget one round-trip transfer, about 700,000 VND by Grab or 60,000 VND if you both take the bus.
Tickets and activities: small numbers that add up
- Old town ticket: 120,000 VND per person (about Rs 400), per the official Hoi An heritage centre, covering the town plus five heritage visits.
- Lantern boat on the Thu Bon: from about 50,000 VND per person; agree the price before boarding.
- Lantern-making class: 300,000 VND per guest at a Cam Thanh village workshop, and you keep the lantern.
- An Bang Beach: free; you pay only for a lounger or drinks.
- Optional Ba Na Hills day trip from the Da Nang side: 650,000 VND per adult on Sun World's official 2026 price list.
Putting it together
Lean 3-day plan for two: homestay two nights about 1.7 million VND, food about 1.8 million, bus and one Grab about 400,000, tickets and boat about 340,000. Total roughly 4.2-4.5 million VND, about Rs 14,000-15,000. Comfortable version: nicer hotel about 2.2 million, food about 3 million, private transfers 700,000, tickets plus boat plus a lantern class about 940,000. Total roughly 6.8-7 million VND, about Rs 23,000. Add tailoring, spa or Ba Na Hills on top if you want them.
Cards work at mid-range hotels and good restaurants, but carry cash: the old town ticket booths normally take cash in VND, and so do boats and street stalls.
