Sixty-five kilometres of water separate Hong Kong and Macau, and the first thing to know is what does not cross it: there are no commercial flights between the two cities, no train, and the Sky Shuttle helicopter that ran for decades suspended its scheduled service in 2026 and now flies charters only (Macau Business, The Standard). What actually makes sense comes down to two choices - the ferry or the bridge bus - and picking the right one is mostly about where you are staying in Macau. Fares below are from the official operators, checked 31 October 2026.
Option 1: the ferry - fastest door to door
Two operators leave from the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan, and the crossing takes about 60 minutes. TurboJET (turbojet.com.hk) sails to Macau's Outer Harbour terminal - closest to the historic centre, Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul. Economy class is HK$194 on weekday day sailings and HK$212 on weekends and holidays (fares effective 25 April 2026). Cotai Water Jet (cotaiwaterjet.com) sails to Taipa - the right terminal for the Cotai casino resorts and the Venetian side - at HK$192 on weekdays, HK$209 on weekends, and HK$242 for night sailings; its fare notes give seniors 60+ and children under 12 HK$20 off. Weekend afternoon sailings sell out: book online a few days ahead, and arrive at the terminal 30-45 minutes before sailing for immigration.
Option 2: the HZMB bridge bus - cheapest, never full
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge shuttle runs 24 hours: HK$65 daytime (06:00-23:59), HK$70 at night, departing every 5-15 minutes at peak (hzmbus.com). The catch is position: the Hong Kong port is on reclaimed land by the airport, so from TST or Central you first ride a city bus out to the bridge port (40-50 minutes), clear Hong Kong exit immigration, ride the bridge (about 40 minutes), then clear Macau entry and take a local bus or free casino shuttle into town. Door to door it roughly matches the ferry, at a third of the price - and it runs when the last ferry has long stopped. With heavy luggage or tired parents, the ferry's single-seat simplicity usually wins; for late departures or tight budgets, the bus is unbeatable.
Why nobody flies or takes a train
The cities are 65 km apart - closer than Delhi to Gurgaon and back. A commercial flight makes no sense over that distance, and there is no rail link. The helicopter was the one airborne option, roughly 15 minutes terminal to terminal, but scheduled flights ended in 2026; charters now start in the thousands of dollars per aircraft, which puts them in celebration territory rather than transport. If someone offers you a "Hong Kong-Macau flight", what they mean is the ferry.
Entry formalities and the return
Indian passports are on Macao's official visa-exemption list (gov.mo) - no visa needed for the side trip. You still clear immigration on both sides, so carry your passport, and keep your Hong Kong PAR confirmation handy for re-entry if you are returning to Hong Kong. Macau accepts Hong Kong dollars almost everywhere at par, so no separate currency run is needed. Choosing how many days to give each city?
