A heavy suitcase and a long foot overbridge look like a bad combination. They are, if you try to carry everything across in one trip. But the bridge is often not the only way across, and the heaviest bag may not need to cross it with you at all. Here is what the official sources say your options are.
First, check what your station offers
A PIB report from January 2024 says Indian Railways had provided 1,292 lifts at 497 stations and 1,287 escalators at 372 stations up to December 2023 - 597 stations in all had one or the other, under the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan. That is a January 2024 count, so treat it as a floor, not the current word: the same release calls this a continuous process. A 2019 PIB release adds that provision began with the bigger NSG 1-4 category stations. Before you travel, check whether your station has a lift or escalator on your platform - the station's notice boards, the enquiry counter, or a RailMadad query are the current sources.
Carry less across the bridge
The railway's own luggage rules cap what can travel inside the coach with you. Suitcases up to 100 x 60 x 25 cm can be carried in the compartment; in AC 3-tier and AC chair car the limit is tighter at 55 x 45 x 22.5 cm. Anything larger must be booked and carried in the brake van, not the passenger compartment - and booked luggage travelling on your train must be presented at the luggage office at least 30 minutes before the advertised departure. The free allowance varies by class: 70 kg in AC First, 50 kg in AC 2-tier and First class, 40 kg in AC 3-tier and chair car, 40 kg in Sleeper, and 35 kg in Second class. Children aged 5 to 12 get half, up to 50 kg. Above the free allowance sits a marginal allowance of 10-15 kg by class - a tolerance, not free weight. The rules say unbooked or partially booked luggage detected above the free allowance but within the marginal allowance is charged at 1.5 times the luggage rate; detected beyond the maximum limit for the class, the excess weight above the free allowance is charged at six times the rate, subject to a minimum of Rs.50. So weigh at home, book the excess when you know about it, and let the brake van take what the rules already route there.
Let someone else carry it
Licensed porters work at the big stations; agree the rate before you hand over a bag. For elderly, ailing and differently-abled passengers there is a formal option: the Yatri Mitra service, described in a 2016 PIB release, provides wheelchair-cum-porter assistance bookable on the IRCTC e-ticketing website and on 139 (IVRS and SMS). That release says IRCTC runs it free through CSR partners where possible, or on a payment basis otherwise. It is a 2016 scheme description, so confirm availability for your station while booking. Some stations also run battery-operated cars: a 2019 PIB release says divisional railway managers decide whether these run free through the commercial publicity route or on a user-pays basis - ask at the station.
On the bridge itself
If the stairs are the only way, keep it to one trip. Group the bags so each adult carries a weight they can actually lift, keep tickets and phone in a pocket you can reach without opening a bag, and start early enough that you are not rushing the stairs against the announcement. With elderly parents, plan around the lift side of the station even if it means a longer walk on level ground.

Quick questions
Does every station have a lift or escalator? No. The January 2024 PIB report counts 597 stations with either facility up to December 2023, and the 2019 report says provision began with the larger NSG 1-4 category stations. Both figures belong to their dates - check your own station's boards or enquiry counter.
How much luggage can I carry into the coach? Under the railway's luggage rules, the free allowance is 70 kg in AC First, 50 kg in AC 2-tier/First, 40 kg in AC 3-tier and chair car, 40 kg in Sleeper and 35 kg in Second class. A marginal allowance of 10-15 kg by class sits above that as a tolerance, not free weight - unbooked or partially booked luggage detected within it is charged at 1.5 times the luggage rate. Bags must also fit the compartment size limits.
Can I book a porter in advance? For elderly, ailing and differently-abled passengers, the 2016 PIB release describes Yatri Mitra booking through the IRCTC e-ticketing website and 139 - a wheelchair-cum-porter service, free through CSR or paid - a 2016 scheme, so confirm availability at your station while booking. Other travellers can hire a licensed porter at the station; agree the rate first.
My suitcase is bigger than 100 x 60 x 25 cm - what now? The luggage rules require oversize bags to be booked into the brake van, presented at the luggage office at least 30 minutes before departure. Confirm the booking and transport arrangements at the luggage office itself.
