How Early Should You Reach the Airport? The Real Deadlines Behind the Advice

'Two hours domestic, three to four international' is the advice - but the flight can actually leave without you much later than you think, or much earlier. The hard deadlines (counter closure, gate closure) and how to time arrival around them.

How Early Should You Reach the Airport? The Real Deadlines Behind the Advice

Short answer: reach the airport 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3-4 hours before an international one - but understand what those numbers protect you from. The flight does not wait at departure time; the check-in counter closes 60 minutes before a domestic departure and 75 minutes before an international one, and the boarding gate closes about 25 minutes before pushback. Miss the counter deadline and the airline can cancel your seat on the spot, full stop. Arrival time is really about never testing those cutoffs.

The deadlines that actually matter. IndiGo's published rules are the clearest example: counters close 60 minutes before domestic departures and 75 minutes before international ones, boarding gates close 25 minutes before departure, and the airline reserves the right to cancel a reservation that misses check-in timelines. Other Indian carriers work to nearly identical clocks. Notice the trap: a 'on time' arrival that leaves you queuing at the counter at the 62-minute mark is a missed flight with no refund and a rebooked one at same-day prices.

Why international needs the extra hour. The 75-minute counter deadline is only the first gate. Immigration queues at Delhi and Mumbai can run 30-60 minutes at evening banks of Gulf and Southeast Asia flights, security adds its own line, and some terminals are long walks. The old '3 hours before' advice covers an ordinary evening; 4 hours is what IndiGo recommends and what a family with elders, kids and four suitcases should plan for at a big metro airport. Smaller airports - Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi - move faster, but the counter deadline is the same everywhere.

What web check-in does and does not buy. Free web check-in opens 48 hours before the flight and closes 60 minutes prior (two hours on Air India international), and it is genuinely time-saving: with only a cabin bag on a domestic flight, you can walk straight to security. But with a checked bag you still need the bag-drop counter, which closes on the same clock as check-in - web check-in does not extend it. Think of web check-in as skipping a queue, not stretching the deadline.

Work backwards, not forwards. The reliable way to set a leave-home time: counter deadline, minus a buffer for queues, minus realistic travel time with traffic, minus the parking-or-dropoff walk. For a 9 PM international departure from Delhi: counter closes 7:45 PM, so target the terminal by 6:30-7 PM, which usually means leaving home around 5-5:30 PM depending on distance. Build the same chain for domestic with its 60-minute deadline. Parents travelling with wheelchair assistance should add 30 minutes - the assistance is excellent but runs on its own clock.

Edge cases that bite. Early-morning departures: counters and even terminal entry can be thinly staffed before 5 AM, but the deadlines do not soften - arrive on time even if the airport looks asleep. Metro-airport evening rush: the drive can double; check live traffic, not habit. And 'gate closes 25 minutes before' means closed - on a delayed boarding announcement, do not wander off for a long dinner; stay within earshot of the gate.

How TripKeeper times airport days. On our trips, departure-day plans are built backwards from the counter deadline - pickups padded for traffic, assistance pre-booked, and nobody doing immigration arithmetic at the queue. If you would like your next holiday's airport math done for you, send a trip-planning inquiry.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

How early should I reach the airport for a domestic flight in India?

Two hours before departure is the standard advice and it works. The hard deadline behind it: check-in counters close 60 minutes before domestic departures, and boarding gates close about 25 minutes before. With only a cabin bag and web check-in done, 90 minutes can be enough at a small airport - but with checked bags, family or elders, keep the full two hours.

How early should I reach the airport for an international flight from India?

Three to four hours before departure - IndiGo recommends four. International counters close 75 minutes before departure, and that deadline is preceded by immigration and security queues that can take 30-60 minutes at busy evening banks in Delhi and Mumbai. Families with elderly parents, kids and multiple bags should plan on the longer end at big metro airports.

What happens if I reach the check-in counter after it closes?

The airline can refuse you and cancel the reservation - counter closure (60 minutes domestic, 75 minutes international before departure) is a hard cutoff, and carriers explicitly reserve the right to cancel seats that miss check-in timelines. Practically, you end up buying a new ticket at same-day fares. This is why arrival time planning matters more than any other airport habit.

Does web check-in let me arrive later at the airport?

Only a little, and only if you have no checked bag. Web check-in (free, opens 48 hours before) lets a cabin-bag-only traveller skip the counter and go straight to security. With a checked bag you must still reach the bag-drop counter before the same closure time - web check-in skips a queue, it does not move the deadline.

When do boarding gates close before a flight?

About 25 minutes before departure at Indian airports. After that, the flight will not wait, even if you are airside and running. Treat the gate time printed on your boarding pass as the last safe moment, and on delayed flights stay near the gate - announcements, not assumptions, are the schedule.

How early should elderly parents or wheelchair users reach the airport?

Add at least 30 minutes to the standard advice - so 2.5 hours domestic, 3.5-4 hours international. Wheelchair assistance at Indian airports is free and good, but it runs on staff availability and its own routing through security. Pre-book the assistance with the airline 48 hours ahead, arrive early, and the experience is calm rather than rushed.
