Muscat sits in a happy middle: noticeably cheaper than Dubai, with paid-sight costs that stay in single digits. The honest frame for an Indian couple: a comfortable mid-range trip runs about OMR 70-110 per person per day (Muscat budget data verified in March 2026), excluding flights. One rial ran between roughly Rs 234 and Rs 252 during 2026, so call it Rs 240-250 when converting. Here is where the money goes.
Hotels: the biggest line, and the one that moves with the season
Current Muscat hotel bands: a basic private room in a budget hotel starts around OMR 8-12 a night; a reliable 3-star in a good location runs OMR 15-25; a 4-star averages OMR 35-55; five-star beach resorts start around OMR 75 and pass OMR 200 in peak season. The seasonal swing matters: October to April is high season and rates jump 30 to 50 percent - the guide's own example has a 3-star room at OMR 20 in July listing at OMR 32 in January. Book December to February stays 6-8 weeks ahead. For couples, a good 3-star in Mutrah or Ruwi at OMR 20-30 is the sweet spot: near the sights, half the price of the beach strip.
Food: local is cheap, hotel dining is not
A casual local meal - a plate of majboos, shuwa or a shawarma-plus-juice dinner - runs about OMR 3-8 a head. Indian restaurants are everywhere in Ruwi and Mutrah at similar prices, so parents are never far from dal and rice. Hotel restaurants and the Opera Galleria are the step up: mains OMR 8-15. Coffee and dates at a cafe cost under a rial. Realistic food spend for a couple eating one local meal and one mid-range meal out: OMR 15-25 a day together.
Transport and tickets
The airport-to-Mutrah taxi runs OMR 8-12; in-town OTaxi or Careem hops are usually OMR 1-4, and the A1 airport bus costs about a rial or less if you are travelling light. Paid sights stay modest: the Grand Mosque admission is OMR 8 (official tourism portal), the National Museum about OMR 5, the Opera House tour about OMR 3, and a sunset dhow or dolphin cruise OMR 10-20 a head. A Nizwa day trip by shared tour runs roughly OMR 20-35 a person, or OMR 60-90 for a private car.
What a week actually costs
Putting the bands together per couple per day, excluding flights: budget style OMR 70-100 (Rs 17,000-25,000), comfortable mid-range OMR 140-220 (Rs 34,000-53,000), luxury from OMR 360 (Rs 87,000). Most Indian families land in the mid-range band and find Muscat good value for what it delivers - clean, calm, and priced without the Gulf markup its neighbour is famous for.
