The short answer
A comfortable 2-night Tirupati trip for two typically lands in three bands: a shoestring pilgrimage around Rs 4,000-6,000 all-in, a comfortable mid-range trip around Rs 10,000-15,000, and a premium version from Rs 20,000 up. The swing factor is not the temple - darshan is free or nearly free - it is where you sleep and how you climb the hill. Prices below were checked in October 2026; confirm live rates when you book.
Darshan: almost free, if you plan
- Sarva Darshan (general): free. Slotted tokens are issued at counters in Tirupati - expect a long wait in season.
- Special Entry Darshan: Rs 300 per person, booked online about three months ahead on the official TTD portal. For a couple: Rs 600 - the single best-value spend of the trip.
- Senior citizen (65+) and differently-abled darshan: free, but only for that queue's rules (spouse attendant, 90-day cool-off).
- Laddus: one Rs 50 laddu is free with senior/PHC tickets; extra laddus are bought at the counter - budget Rs 100-200 if you are carrying some home.
Where you sleep: the real budget lever
- TTD pilgrim accommodation in Tirupati (official rates): non-AC rooms from Rs 200, AC Rs 400-600, deluxe suits Rs 800-1,000; dharmasalas from Rs 50-150. Basic, clean, unbeatable value - book on the TTD portal, they sell out fast.
- Private budget hotels near the station/bus stand: roughly Rs 1,000-1,800 a night.
- Mid-range: roughly Rs 2,500-4,500 a night.
- Premium: Rs 6,000 and up. Check live prices - Tirupati rates jump on weekends and festival days.
Getting there and up the hill
- Trains to Tirupati are the couple-friendly default - sleeper/3AC fares vary by origin, book early on IRCTC.
- Tirupati to Tirumala: APSRTC hill buses cost about Rs 65-70 per person from the Central Bus Stand; TTD also runs free buses. Private taxis for the round trip run roughly Rs 1,500-2,500 depending on negotiation and waiting.
- In town: autos Rs 40-150 (meters are rare - agree the fare first), APSRTC city buses Rs 10-25, Ola/Uber available but patchy early morning and late night.
- Airport to town: Rs 250-500 by taxi.
Food and the rest
- A veg meals plate at a local mess: Rs 80-150 per person. Restaurant dinner for two: Rs 400-800.
- The famous free annaprasadam at Tirumala serves simple meals to all pilgrims - a genuine budget saver on darshan day.
- Miscellaneous: locker/mobile deposit free, small pooja items Rs 100-300, shopping (vadam, pickles) as you like.
Three sample budgets for two (2 nights, excluding your train/flight to Tirupati)
- Shoestring, around Rs 4,500: TTD AC room Rs 400 x 2 nights, Sarva Darshan free, APSRTC buses, mess food, free annaprasadam on darshan day.
- Comfortable, around Rs 12,000: mid-range hotel Rs 3,500 x 2, Special Entry Darshan Rs 300 x 2, one taxi up the hill, mix of messes and restaurants.
- Premium, from Rs 22,000: premium hotel Rs 7,000+ x 2, SED tickets, private cab throughout, restaurant meals and shopping.
Whatever the tier, the two rules hold: book darshan before anything else, and keep one meal a day at a mess or the annaprasadam hall - it is where Tirupati feeds you best and cheapest.
