Japan Festivals Worth Planning a Trip Around in 2027

Japan does festivals like nowhere else - whole cities taken over by lantern-lit floats, portable shrines carried through packed streets, fireworks over rivers. A handful of them genuinely justify planning a trip around. This list sticks to the great ones, and it is honest about dates: some 2027 festivals are already fixed or officially announced, while others only confirm months ahead - we mark the difference so you never book against a date that could still move.

The winter anchor: Sapporo Snow Festival, February 4-11, 2027 (officially confirmed). The 77th Sapporo Snow Festival has its dates locked: February 4-11, 2027, centered on Odori Park with giant snow and ice sculptures across three sites. It is one of Asia's great winter events and the easiest festival trip to plan, because the dates are already official - but Sapporo hotels for those eight days sell out far in advance, so this is a book-by-mid-2026 event.

Spring: shrine festivals on fixed dates. Kyoto's Aoi Matsuri on May 15 is one of the city's three great festivals - a Heian-era court procession in full period dress from the Imperial Palace to the Kamo shrines, held on the same date every year. Tokyo's Sanja Matsuri takes over Asakusa on the third Friday to Sunday of May (May 21-23 in 2027), with about a hundred mikoshi portable shrines carried through the streets around Senso-ji - loud, dense and unforgettable. The Takayama Spring Festival on April 14-15, with its ornate yatai floats in a preserved old mountain town, pairs beautifully with the tail of cherry blossom season in the Alps.

July: the two giants. Kyoto's Gion Matsuri runs through July with its great float processions on July 17 and July 24 - dates fixed by tradition for over a thousand years; the yoiyama street evenings before each parade are when the city is at its most atmospheric. Osaka's Tenjin Matsuri on July 24-25 answers with a river procession and fireworks over the Okawa. Both are fixed-date events you can plan against with confidence; both also mean peak hotel prices in their cities, so book well ahead.

August: the northern summer circuit. Tohoku's great summer festivals all hold fixed dates, which makes them easy to chain: Aomori's Nebuta Matsuri (August 2-7) with its colossal glowing warrior floats, Akita's Kanto Matsuri (August 3-6) with twelve-meter bamboo poles hung with lanterns balanced on foreheads, and Sendai's Tanabata Matsuri (August 6-8) with its spectacular streamer-filled shopping arcades. A week in early August can take in all three by train - one of the best festival itineraries Japan offers, and entirely plannable because none of these dates move.

Autumn and year-end. The Takayama Autumn Festival on October 9-10 brings the floats out again against early foliage in the hills. Kyoto's Jidai Matsuri on October 22 parades twelve centuries of costume through the city. Chichibu's Night Festival on December 2-3 closes the year with illuminated floats and winter fireworks near Tokyo - cold, crowded and magnificent.

The dates to treat with care. Fireworks festivals are the big exception to fixed-date planning: the famous ones - Sumidagawa in Tokyo, the great displays of Omagari, Nagaoka and the Lake Biwa show - announce their exact dates through organizers' official sites, typically between winter and spring for that summer. Smaller neighborhood festivals announce even later. For anything in this article not listed with an explicit 2027 date, confirm on the festival's official site or city tourism page before booking non-refundable travel; dates we have given as fixed are fixed by long tradition, but typhoons and exceptional circumstances have forced rare cancellations before.

How far ahead to book. For Sapporo in February and Gion in July, think six months out for central hotels. The Tohoku summer circuit is more forgiving - three to four months usually suffices - but festival-night seats on shinkansen still go early. Festival trips also reward structure: stay two nights minimum in a festival city, because parades run on specific hours and weather can slide a schedule.

How TripKeeper builds festival trips. Our team tracks official festival announcements through the year and only locks client itineraries to dates organizers have confirmed - for the rest we plan against the traditional window and confirm before money commits. Founder-hosted batches time departures to the great fixed-date festivals; independent travelers get the same announcement tracking, hotel-timing and route sequencing through the trip-planning inquiry.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

What are the biggest festivals in Japan in 2027?

The standouts worth planning around: the Sapporo Snow Festival (February 4-11, 2027, officially confirmed), Kyoto's Gion Matsuri (float parades July 17 and 24, fixed dates), Osaka's Tenjin Matsuri (July 24-25), and the Tohoku summer circuit - Aomori Nebuta (August 2-7), Akita Kanto (August 3-6) and Sendai Tanabata (August 6-8). Spring brings Kyoto's Aoi Matsuri (May 15) and Tokyo's Sanja Matsuri (May 21-23, 2027).

Is the Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 date confirmed?

Yes. The 77th Sapporo Snow Festival is officially scheduled for February 4-11, 2027, centered on Odori Park. It is one of the few 2027 festivals with fully confirmed dates already, which makes it easy to plan - but Sapporo hotels for those eight days sell out many months in advance.

When is the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto in 2027?

Gion Matsuri runs through July every year, with its two great float processions fixed by tradition on July 17 (the Saki parade) and July 24 (the Ato parade) - these dates do not change year to year. The yoiyama street-festival evenings on the three nights before each parade are when central Kyoto is at its most atmospheric.

Are Japanese festival dates the same every year?

Many of the great ones are: Gion Matsuri (July 17 and 24), Tenjin Matsuri (July 24-25), Nebuta (August 2-7), Kanto (August 3-6), Sendai Tanabata (August 6-8), Aoi Matsuri (May 15) and the Takayama festivals (April 14-15, October 9-10) hold traditional fixed dates. Fireworks festivals are the main exception - they announce dates on their official sites months ahead. Always confirm on the official site before booking non-refundable travel.

What is the best time of year for festivals in Japan?

Summer is the densest festival season - July brings Kyoto's Gion and Osaka's Tenjin, and early August concentrates Tohoku's three great festivals (Nebuta, Kanto, Tanabata) into one week you can chain by train. Winter has February's Sapporo Snow Festival, spring has May's Aoi and Sanja Matsuri, and autumn has Takayama (October 9-10) and Kyoto's Jidai Matsuri (October 22).

How far in advance should I book a Japan festival trip?

For Sapporo in February and Kyoto during Gion in July, book central hotels around six months ahead. The Tohoku August circuit usually works at three to four months, but reserve shinkansen seats as soon as they open one month out. Stay at least two nights in each festival city - parades run on fixed hours and weather can shift a schedule.
