Japan Visa for Indian Children: What Changes When a Family Applies?

Every child needs their own passport and their own visa application - but a family applies together, and a few extra documents do the heavy lifting. What actually changes when kids are on the form.

Children are not add-ons to a parent's Japan visa - every child, even an infant, needs their own passport and their own visa application. The good news is that the process is the same one the parents follow: since April 2024, short-term tourism visas from India are eVisas applied through VFS, single entry, up to 90 days, no embassy appointment. A family simply files one application per person, together.

The child's application mirrors the adult one. Same form, same photo rules, same core checklist, same fee - the embassy lists the visa fee for Indian nationals at INR 500 from 1 July 2026, plus the VFS service charge, and that applies per applicant, whatever their age. Parents or guardians sign and submit on the child's behalf.

What changes is the paperwork around relationships. The VFS checklist asks for proof of relationship when an applicant is accompanied by a dependent - for children, that means the birth certificate, along with passport copies. It is the document that ties the child's application to the parents travelling with them, so keep the names on it exactly consistent with the passports.

A few habits save families real trouble. Check every passport's validity early, because a child's passport often expires sooner than you remember. Fill each form from that person's own passport, never from memory. And if your family's situation is unusual - one parent travelling alone with the child, a surname that differs across documents, a guardianship arrangement - read the current VFS checklist the week you apply and ask VFS directly what it wants for your case, because document lists are updated from time to time.

Timing works in your favour if you start early. Applications open three months before travel, so a family can file together about four to six weeks before flying and keep buffer for the embassy asking for an extra document. The embassy notes it may request an interview or additional documentation depending on the application, and that is routine, not a red flag.

On our hosted family batches, this is exactly where our team earns its keep: we hand parents a per-person document checklist - adults, children, grandparents - and check every form line by line before anything goes to VFS. Most family visa stress is just one missed field or one expired passport found too late. If you are planning a Japan trip with children and want the paperwork handled the way we do it for our own groups, tell us your dates and who is travelling.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Does a child need a separate Japan visa, or are they covered by a parent's?

Every child needs their own visa application, even an infant. A family files one application per person through VFS, together.

Does my child need their own passport for a Japan visa?

Yes. Each applicant, whatever their age, applies on their own passport. Check its validity early - children's passports expire sooner than parents expect.

What extra documents does a child's Japan visa application need?

Proof of relationship - the VFS checklist asks for documents like the birth certificate and passport copies when a dependent travels with the applicant. Check the current VFS checklist the week you apply.

Who signs a Japan visa application for a minor?

A parent or guardian signs and submits on the child's behalf. The form, photo rules and checklist otherwise mirror the adult application.

What is the Japan visa fee for a child from India?

The same as an adult's: the embassy lists INR 500 per applicant for Indian nationals from 1 July 2026, plus the VFS service charge.

Can one parent apply for a Japan visa with a child alone?

Yes, but document expectations can differ for single-parent travel. Read the current VFS checklist for your case and ask VFS directly what it requires before you file.
