Madurai to Kodaikanal: flight, train and road combinations that actually make sense

Kodaikanal has no airport and no railway station of its own, so every route ends on the same ghat road. Here is how the flight, train and bus options actually chain together, what each costs, and which one we would book.

The one thing to understand first

Kodaikanal sits at about 2,100 m with no airport and no usable railway station in town. Every route - flight, train or bus - ends with roughly 120 km and three and a half to four and a half hours on the road from Madurai, the last hour climbing the ghat section past Batlagundu. So the real question is not flight versus train versus road; it is which combination gets you to Madurai (or Kodai Road) at the right time for the climb.

By road direct: the simplest option

  • TNSTC buses run from Madurai's main bus stands to Kodaikanal, including early-morning departures (typical timings cluster around 3:30-6:00 AM) and services through the day, in ordinary, deluxe and semi-sleeper classes. This is the cheapest way up - a few hundred rupees - and the drivers know every hairpin by heart. Book ahead on weekends and holidays.
  • A private taxi from Madurai city costs roughly Rs 3,000-4,500 one way depending on vehicle and season, takes about 3.5 hours, and lets you stop at the viewpoints on the climb. For families of three or more, the per-head maths starts to favour the taxi.
  • The ghat road is well made but winding. Anyone prone to motion sickness should sit up front and avoid reading; the last 40 km is a steady series of bends.

By train: useful only in one specific way

There is no train to Kodaikanal. The sensible rail play is arriving at Madurai Junction - a major hub with trains from Chennai, Bengaluru, Coimbatore and Kerala - and switching straight to a bus or taxi. Kodai Road station, about 80 km from the lake, is the technically nearest railhead, but it is a small station with fewer trains and a longer road leg than Madurai; it only wins if your train stops there at a convenient hour and Madurai does not work. For most travellers, train-to-Madurai plus road beats train-to-Kodai Road.

By flight: fly into Madurai, then accept the road

Madurai Airport (IXM) has direct flights from Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai, plus connections beyond. From the airport, Kodaikanal is about 120 km - roughly three and a half to four hours by taxi. Book the cab in advance in season and aim to land by early afternoon at the latest: you want to finish the ghat climb in daylight. There are no practical flights closer to the hills, so do not hunt for one.

Which combination we would book

  • Budget solo or couple: train or flight into Madurai, TNSTC bus up. Cheapest, and the early buses put you in Kodai by late morning.
  • Family with luggage and elders: flight or train into Madurai, pre-booked taxi up, lunch stop on the way. The door-to-door comfort is worth the difference.
  • Already in Madurai city: straight to the bus stand or taxi point - no reason to involve any other mode.
  • Coming from Kerala side: look at Kumily-Theni approaches instead of routing through Madurai at all.

Small print that saves the trip

  • In season (November to February and the April-June school holidays), book buses and taxis days ahead - this route sells out on Friday evenings.
  • Kodaikanal town may require a vehicle entry fee at the toll point on the approach road; keep small cash.
  • Start the descent back by early afternoon - late-evening ghat driving in fog is the one part of this route that is genuinely no fun.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

How do I get from Madurai to Kodaikanal?

The cheapest way is a TNSTC bus from Madurai's bus stand (early morning and daytime services, a few hundred rupees, about 4 hours). A private taxi costs Rs 3,000-4,500 one way and takes about 3.5 hours. There is no train to Kodaikanal - arrive at Madurai Junction and continue by road.

Does Kodaikanal have a railway station or airport?

No. The nearest railhead is Kodai Road, about 80 km away, but it is small with fewer trains - Madurai Junction is the better rail option. The nearest airport is Madurai (IXM), from where Kodaikanal is about 120 km by road, roughly three and a half to four hours by taxi.

How much is a taxi from Madurai to Kodaikanal?
