Good news first: New Zealand cafes treat vegetarian as normal, not niche - every menu has real plant options. Better news: Queenstown has a 100 percent pure vegetarian Indian restaurant in the CBD, The Bull, serving North and South Indian food with no meat or egg in the kitchen - a gift for parents who want dal, dosa and paneer on holiday. Vegetarian in Queenstown is easy; here is the map.
The reliable core
The Bull (CBD) covers the full Indian spread - thalis, dosas, curries - at NZ$20-35 a head. Beyond it, every cafe does vegetarian breakfasts and lunches: smashed avo, mushrooms on toast, big salads, halloumi burgers (check the haloumi is cooked separately if strict). Fergburger, the famous queue, has vegetarian burgers (the Holier Than Thou tofu option and a mushroom burger) so nobody in the family misses the ritual. Pubs and restaurants universally mark veg options - NZ menus are good at it - and pizza/pasta places fill gaps cheaply at NZ$17-30.
Self-catering and picnics
The budget and comfort play in one: Countdown and New World supermarkets stock Indian staples (paneer, ready curries, naan), and Queenstown Gardens or the lakefront turn a NZ$15 shop into the best-value lunch in town. Apartments with kitchens are worth the small premium for families - breakfast at home saves NZ$20 a head daily.
The small traps
Three questions cover most surprises. Cheese: most NZ cheese uses microbial or vegetarian rennet, but parmesan is never vegetarian - ask in Italian places. Stock: soups and risottos may use chicken stock even when listed as vegetable - the menu marking is usually honest, but strict vegetarians should confirm. Eggs: brunch dishes and baked goods lean on eggs; vegans should ask about milk in cafe coffee (oat and soy are standard alternatives). And a practical note: pure-veg restaurants close earlier than pubs - The Bull and most kitchens wind down by 9-9:30pm, so eat Indian-standard time, not Kiwi-late.
