Tashkent to Samarkand: flight, train and road combinations that actually make sense

Take the Afrosiyob: 344km in 2h10, UZS 311,000 economy, arriving in central Samarkand. Why the domestic flight and shared-taxi options lose, the Sharq train's niche, and how to book before seats sell out.

There is a clear winner on this route - the Afrosiyob high-speed train - and it wins by a margin that makes the other options niche choices. Here is the honest comparison, with current prices.

The Afrosiyob: take this

The Spanish-built Talgo covers the 344km from Tashkent Central to Samarkand in 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes, several times a day, every day. Per a railway booking search on 27 September 2026, economy costs UZS 311,000 (about Rs 2,200, or $25) and business UZS 455,000 one way. It is punctual, air-conditioned, arrives at Samarkand station close to the centre, and the seats are proper reclining armchairs. Book on the official Uzbekistan Railways site or app as soon as dates are fixed - spring and autumn weekend seats sell out days ahead, and passports are required to board.

Why the flight loses

Uzbekistan Airways flies Tashkent-Samarkand in about 50 minutes - but add the trip to Tashkent's Terminal 3, a 60-90 minute buffer, and a taxi from Samarkand airport, and the door-to-door time meets or beats three hours for triple the price. The flight makes sense only as a same-day connection if you land in Tashkent internationally and fly straight on. Everyone else: train.

The Sharq train and shared taxis

The Sharq is the classic daytime train: roughly 3 to 3.5 hours for a lower fare - it suits travellers on a tight budget who enjoy slow travel, but on any time-boxed trip the saved hour is worth more than the saved som. Shared taxis and intercity cars take about 4 hours on the M39, cost similar to the train per seat, and are what locals use when trains are sold out - useful as a last-resort backup, not a plan.

Putting it in the trip

Most itineraries do Tashkent in, Samarkand out: 2-3 days in the capital (see the 3-day Tashkent itinerary), a morning Afrosiyob down, two nights in Samarkand, and either a return train or the onward leg to Bukhara. A day trip is also workable - the Samarkand day-trip guide has the hour-by-hour plan. Whichever shape you choose, the train is the spine of it.

Questions on this article

What is the best way from Tashkent to Samarkand?

The Afrosiyob high-speed train: 344km in 2h10-2h30, several times daily. Economy UZS 311,000 (about Rs 2,200), business UZS 455,000 (railway search, 27 Sep 2026). Punctual, air-conditioned, arrives close to central Samarkand. Book on the official railway site or app as soon as dates are fixed - weekend seats sell out days ahead, and a passport is required to board.

Should you fly from Tashkent to Samarkand?

Usually no. The flight is 50 minutes, but add the ride to Tashkent's Terminal 3, a 60-90 minute buffer and a taxi from Samarkand airport, and door-to-door meets or passes three hours at triple the price. It only makes sense as a same-day connection off an international arrival. Everyone else: train.

When do the Sharq train or shared taxis make sense?

The Sharq is the classic daytime train: about 3-3.5 hours for a lower fare - fine for tight budgets and slow-travel fans, but on a time-boxed trip the saved hour is worth more than the saved som. Shared taxis take about 4 hours on the M39 at similar per-seat cost - locals use them when trains sell out; a last-resort backup, not a plan.
