If your train's platform changes suddenly, do not move with the crowd: first confirm the announcement is about your train number, note the new platform, then follow staff directions on the designated passenger route, and recheck your train and coach when you get there. The sources behind this advice - a Ministry of Railways advisory from 30 October 2024 and a release from 28 June 2019 - support listening to announcements and using foot overbridges; they do not define one platform-change procedure for every station, so directions at your station on the day win.

Confirm which train the announcement concerns

We suggest checking your train number before picking up your bags. Listen for the complete announcement rather than moving because you recognise a destination name or see other passengers leaving.

Keep three questions in mind: Is this our train? What is the new platform? How do we reach it? If you missed something, ask, "Is train number _____ now on platform _____?"

Once the change is clear, repeat the new platform number to your companions. We suggest agreeing on the next step before anyone starts walking.

Follow directions where you are

A Ministry of Railways advisory dated 30 October 2024 asked passengers to listen to announcements and follow railway staff instructions. It was issued for Diwali and Chhath travel, rather than as a dedicated platform-change procedure.

We suggest following directions given at your location. Before joining a staircase or passage, check that it leads towards the platform you need.

If stairs are difficult for someone, explain that while asking for directions: "We need platform _____. My mother cannot comfortably use stairs. Which route should we take?" The sources do not establish one transfer route or assistance arrangement for every station and train.

Use the designated passenger route

A Ministry release dated 28 June 2019 described announcements advising passengers to use foot overbridges and avoid crossing railway tracks.

We suggest identifying the designated route instead of choosing a shortcut because the other platform looks close. Ask railway staff if you cannot work out where to go.

While walking, put your phone away. If you need to check directions again, pause somewhere clear of the main passage. Avoid stopping at the entrance to a staircase to reorganise bags.

If the board and the announcement disagree

Say exactly what you saw and heard: "The board shows platform _____, but we heard _____ for train number _____. Please confirm." CRIS's NTES page (undated) lists station enquiry counters and the IVRS-based 139 call centres as channels for train information. Read our post on finding your platform with a train number.

Recheck your train, then your coach

At the new platform, we suggest confirming the train number before looking for your coach. Check your coach information afresh rather than assuming your old waiting position translates to the new platform.

Before approaching the train, make sure your companions understand which coach you are looking for. If anything remains unclear, ask one specific question at a time.

Common questions

What if I cannot understand the announcement?
We suggest showing your train number to railway staff and asking them to write or point out the platform number.

Can I rely on an earlier screenshot?
We suggest treating it as a record of earlier information and checking again before acting.

What if the person I ask cannot confirm?
We suggest saying what remains unanswered and requesting help from another railway staff member.

What if I still cannot find my train?
We suggest asking about your train's current location before making another platform transfer.

Sources checked on 25 October 2026: RPF advisory for Diwali and Chhath travel, 30 October 2024, Ministry of Railways release, 28 June 2019, CRIS NTES project page. These sources support listening to announcements, following staff instructions and using foot overbridges; they do not define a single platform-change procedure for every station.
