Australia trip planner for Indian families

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026

Australia is the long-haul holiday Indian families plan carefully and then talk about for years: Air India flies Delhi to Sydney nonstop in about 12 hours 45 minutes, and Delhi to Melbourne in about 12 and a half, with Qantas sharing the Melbourne route. Indians do need a visa - the subclass 600 visitor visa, applied for online well before travel; our visa guide walks through the documents. The seasons run upside down: Christmas is beach weather, June is coat weather, and October to April is the sweet spot for Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast. Australia sits 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of India depending on daylight saving, so expect a day or two of gentle jet lag. Once there, everything is easy: English with an accent you will enjoy decoding (brekkie, barbie, servo), excellent vegetarian and Indian restaurants in every city, halal butchers in every suburb, and 230-volt sockets that take Indian chargers with a simple plug adapter. Give a first trip 10 to 14 days - Sydney's harbour, Melbourne's laneways and penguin parade, the Gold Coast's theme parks for the children, and the Great Barrier Reef or Uluru if time allows.

Quick questions

Do Indians need a visa for Australia?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a visitor visa (subclass 600, tourist stream) applied for online through ImmiAccount, well before travel - processing takes weeks, so apply early. You will need to show funds, travel plans and reasons to return home; biometrics are collected at a VFS centre in India. Our Australia visa guide covers the full document list and process.

How long is the flight from India to Australia?

Delhi to Sydney is about 12 hours 45 minutes nonstop on Air India; Delhi to Melbourne is about 12 hours 10 to 25 minutes, flown nonstop by Air India and Qantas. One-stop options via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and other hubs take 16 hours and up - worth considering for the Gold Coast or Cairns, which have no direct India flights.

What is the best time to visit Australia?

Remember the seasons are reversed: December to February is summer, June to August is winter. For Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast, October to April is the most pleasant stretch, with December-January the busiest (and dearest) holiday season. The tropical north (Cairns, the Reef) is best in the dry season, May to October.

Is Australia good for vegetarian and Jain families?

Very good. Most Australian restaurants are vegetarian and vegan-friendly - Sydney and Melbourne have some of the world's best plant-based dining - and Indian restaurants are everywhere, with several offering dedicated vegan and Jain-aware menus. Halal butchers and restaurants are easy to find in every major city. Supermarkets stock paneer, dals and Indian staples if you self-cater.

What is the time difference between India and Australia?

Sydney and Melbourne are 5.5 hours ahead of India during daylight saving (October to early April) and 4.5 hours ahead the rest of the year. Perth is 2.5 hours ahead year-round. The shift is manageable - plan a light first day and an early night.

How many days do we need for a first Australia trip?

Ten to fourteen days is the comfortable first trip: 3-4 days Sydney (harbour, beaches, Blue Mountains), 3 days Melbourne (laneways, Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island penguins), 3-4 days Gold Coast or Cairns (theme parks or the Great Barrier Reef), plus travel days. Add Uluru or Tasmania on a second trip - distances in Australia are Indian-continent scale, not European.
