Australia events and festivals guide for families

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026
The short answer

Australia's calendar suits Indian families well: the giant Sydney New Year's Eve fireworks over the harbour, the Melbourne Cup - the race that stops a nation - on 3 November 2026, a proper Christmas and Boxing Day summer break in late December, and Diwali celebrated big in Sydney's Harris Park and Melbourne on 8 November 2026. Fixed national days - Australia Day on 26 January and ANZAC Day on 25 April - bring parades and some closures, and Vivid Sydney lights up the harbour each May-June. Sights stay open through most events; book Sydney hotels early for New Year's Eve.

January

Australia Day

Nationwide Typical timing

Usually 26 January every year, a fixed national public holiday.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Australia's national day: citizenship ceremonies, harbour regattas and ferry races in Sydney, the Big Day Out at Melbourne's parks, fireworks in the capitals, and barbecues everywhere. Many First Nations Australians observe it as Invasion Day, with respectful events of their own.

For families: A festive, very Australian day - ferry races on Sydney Harbour are wonderful with children. Expect closures of offices and some shops, busy beaches and big crowds at the evening fireworks.

April

ANZAC Day

Nationwide Typical timing

Usually 25 April every year, a fixed national public holiday.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Australia and New Zealand's day of remembrance: dawn services at war memorials across the country, veterans' marches through every capital city, and a reflective, moving public holiday that most shops observe until 1 pm.

For families: Worth experiencing once: the dawn service and the march are powerful, and children learn history fast. Most shops open only after 1 pm; sights reopen for the afternoon.

May

Vivid Sydney

Sydney (Circular Quay, Opera House, Darling Harbour) Typical timing

Usually May-June each year; 2027 dates not yet announced.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

The world's largest festival of light, music and ideas: the Sydney Opera House sails become a canvas of light, harbour buildings glow with projections, and free light walks wind through the city for three winter weeks.

For families: One of the great free family nights out - children love the interactive light installations. Dress for a winter evening, go on a weeknight to dodge crowds, and book Sydney hotels early once dates announce.

November

Melbourne Cup

Melbourne (Flemington Racecourse) Dates confirmed for 2026

3 Nov 2026 · Dates from timeanddate, checked 30 Oct 2026

The race that stops a nation: Australia's biggest horse race, run on the first Tuesday of November, with Melbourne on public holiday, offices pausing for the race, and the city in full spring-carnival dress.

For families: Flemington has family-friendly zones and free entry for children on Cup day; the real fun is the citywide buzz - restaurants run Cup lunches, and the Spring Racing Carnival decorates the whole week.

Diwali

Sydney (Harris Park) and Melbourne Dates confirmed for 2026

8 Nov 2026 · Dates from timeanddate, checked 30 Oct 2026

Australia's huge Indian community celebrates Diwali out loud: Harris Park's Wigram Street glows with lights, sweets and street food, Melbourne's Indian suburbs host melas and fireworks, and city councils run public Diwali festivals in Sydney and Melbourne.

For families: If your trip falls near Diwali, Harris Park on the night is pure joy for children - lights, mithai and a carnival crowd. Restaurants book out, so reserve early; it is the most festive Indian evening outside India.

December

Sydney New Year's Eve fireworks

Sydney Harbour Dates confirmed for 2026

31 Dec 2026 · Dates from timeanddate, checked 30 Oct 2026

One of the world's great New Year's Eve shows: two fireworks displays over Sydney Harbour - a 9 pm family round and the midnight main event - watched by a million people from foreshore vantage points and harbour cruises.

For families: The 9 pm family fireworks are made for children - watch from a free vantage like Mrs Macquarie's Point (arrive by afternoon for a spot) or book a harbour cruise dinner. Public transport runs all night and is the only sane way home.

Christmas Day

Nationwide Dates confirmed for 2026

25 Dec 2026 · Dates from timeanddate, checked 30 Oct 2026

A summer Christmas: Australians celebrate with beach barbecues, seafood lunches and backyard cricket rather than snow. Melbourne's Myer windows and Sydney's Martin Place tree draw families all December, and Carols by Candlelight is the beloved Christmas Eve tradition.

For families: Almost everything shuts on 25 December - shops, museums and most restaurants - so plan a beach day, a hotel lunch or a harbour walk, and stock up the day before. The lights and carols in the weeks before are the family highlight.

Boxing Day (Test cricket and sales)

Nationwide; Melbourne for the Test Dates confirmed for 2026

26 Dec 2026 · Dates from timeanddate, checked 30 Oct 2026

Two great Australian institutions share one day: the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, a hundred-thousand-seat cricket pilgrimage, and the Boxing Day sales, Australia's biggest shopping day of the year.

For families: For an Indian cricket family, the Boxing Day Test at the MCG is a bucket-list day - book tickets months ahead. The sales are worth a morning if you like bargains; beaches are the relaxed alternative.

Quick questions

Which Australian event is best for families?

Sydney's New Year's Eve has a dedicated 9 pm family fireworks show over the harbour - the best family event in the country. Vivid Sydney in May-June is a close second: free, magical light walks that children adore. If you visit in November, Diwali in Harris Park feels like home.

When is Diwali celebrated in Australia?

On 8 November 2026, the same day as India - it is an observance, not a public holiday, but Australia's million-strong Indian community celebrates it big. Sydney's Harris Park (Little India) and Melbourne's Indian suburbs host lights, melas and fireworks, and city councils run public Diwali festivals.

Is everything closed on Christmas Day in Australia?

Almost everything - shops, museums and most restaurants shut on 25 December 2026, so plan a beach day, a hotel Christmas lunch or a harbour walk, and buy groceries the day before. Boxing Day reopens with the famous sales and the MCG Test.

What is the Boxing Day Test?

Australia's biggest cricket day: a Test match starting 26 December at the Melbourne Cricket Ground before crowds of up to a hundred thousand. For an Indian cricket-loving family it is a bucket-list experience - book tickets months ahead, and soak in the MCG even if you only attend one session.

When is Vivid Sydney 2027?

The dates had not been announced when this guide was last checked; Vivid always runs for about three weeks across May and June, Sydney's winter. The Opera House light show and harbour projections are free - check back as your trip approaches and book hotels early.
