Egypt trip planner for Indian families

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026

Egypt is one of the easiest big-history trips from India: EgyptAir flies Delhi to Cairo nonstop in about 6.5 hours, and Indians can apply for the Egypt e-Visa online before travel. Cairo pairs the Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum with the Khan el-Khalili bazaar; Luxor and Aswan hold the Valley of the Kings and Nile cruises; the Red Sea resorts of Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh add beach and reef days. October to April is the comfortable season, with warm days and cool evenings; May to September turns very hot in Luxor and Aswan. Cairo runs 3.5 hours behind India in winter and 2.5 hours during Egypt's daylight-saving summer, so jet lag is barely felt. On the ground: Arabic is the language, English works in tourist areas, the Egyptian pound is the currency, small tips (baksheesh) are expected, and sockets are 220-volt European two-pin - Indian two-pin chargers fit straight in. Vegetarian food is surprisingly easy (koshari, ful and taameya are everyday staples), and Indian restaurants exist in Cairo. Give a first trip 7 to 9 days: Cairo for 3, Luxor and Aswan or a Nile cruise for 3, and a Red Sea finish if time allows.

Quick questions

Do Indians need a visa for Egypt?

Yes. Indian passport holders apply for the Egypt e-Visa online before travel: the official portal charges $30 for a single-entry tourist visa and $65 for multiple entries, and your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival. Our Egypt visa guide covers the steps.

How long is the flight from India to Egypt?

EgyptAir flies Delhi to Cairo nonstop in about 6 hours 35 minutes over 2,750 miles, per FlightsFrom schedule data. One-stop options through Gulf hubs take roughly 9 to 13 hours total.

What is the best time to visit Egypt?

October to April is the comfortable window: warm days, cool evenings, and bearable heat at the Luxor and Aswan sites. May to September is very hot in Upper Egypt. Our best-time guide has a month-by-month view.

What is the time difference between India and Egypt?

Cairo runs 3.5 hours behind India in winter. During Egypt's daylight-saving summer (late April to end of October) it is 2.5 hours behind. The westward flight means almost no jet lag.

What money and plugs do I need in Egypt?

The currency is the Egyptian pound; cards work in hotels and bigger restaurants, cash rules in markets and for tips. Sockets are 220-volt European two-pin, so Indian two-pin chargers fit; three-pin plugs need an adapter.

Is Egypt vegetarian-friendly for Indians?

More than most people expect. Koshari (lentils, rice and pasta), ful medames (fava beans) and taameya (Egyptian falafel) are everyday vegetarian staples, and mahshi (stuffed vegetables) is common. Jain travellers should ask, since onion and garlic are used widely. Our Egypt food guide maps it dish by dish.
