The short answer

Egypt's calendar mixes ancient spectacle with living tradition: the Abu Simbel Sun Festival on 22 February and 22 October, when dawn light enters Ramses II's temple; the Cairo International Film Festival from 11-20 November 2026; Coptic Christmas on 7 January; and Sham el-Nessim, the spring picnic day every Egyptian family celebrates, on 3 May 2027. The Islamic festivals - Eid el Fitr (around 10-12 March 2027) and Eid al-Adha (around 17-19 May 2027) - bring sweets, family visits and closed shops; dates are confirmed by moon sighting. Nationwide; biggest celebrations in Coptic Cairo Dates confirmed for 2027

7 Jan 2027 · Dates from timeanddate.com, checked 30 Oct 2026

Egypt's Coptic Christians celebrate Christmas on 7 January: midnight mass at the ancient churches of Coptic Cairo, family feasts and kahk-style sweets in bakeries.

For families: A warm cultural window for families - the churches of Old Cairo are festive, and bakeries overflow with seasonal sweets. Services are solemn; visit the area by day and respect the services at night.

February

Abu Simbel Sun Festival (February)

Abu Simbel temples, Lake Nasser Dates confirmed for 2027

22 Feb 2027 · Dates from Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, checked 30 Oct 2026

Twice a year, dawn sunlight pierces the Great Temple of Abu Simbel and lights the statues of the gods in the inner sanctum - a 3,200-year-old calendar, celebrated with Nubian music, dance and crowds.

For families: Unforgettable for children who like engineering - the temple was moved piece by piece to save it from Lake Nasser. Expect a very early start (alignment at dawn) and big crowds; book the Aswan-Abu Simbel transfer early.

The three-day festival ending Ramadan: new clothes, family visits, kahk cookies in every bakery, and an explosion of sweets and lights after the fasting month.

For families: A joyful time to visit - the evenings sparkle and kahk cookies are a must-try. Expect busy roads as families travel, some closures on the first day, and the warmest welcomes of the year.

May

Sham el-Nessim (Spring Festival)

Nationwide; parks and Nile banks Dates confirmed for 2027

3 May 2027 · Dates from timeanddate.com, checked 30 Oct 2026

A spring festival older than the pharaohs: every Egyptian family picnics outdoors on the Monday after Coptic Easter, eating feseekh (salted fish), coloured eggs and spring onions in parks and on Nile banks.

For families: The friendliest day to be in Egypt - families share picnics in every park and will wave you over. Join with tame picnic foods from a bakery rather than the pungent feseekh; Cairo's Al-Azhar Park is the loveliest spot.

Eid al-Adha

Nationwide Typical timing

Usually Around 17-19 May 2027 per timeanddate; final dates confirmed by moon sighting.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

The festival of sacrifice: families share meat meals, give to the poor, and restaurants serve fattah - the celebration dish of rice, bread and slow-cooked meat in garlic-vinegar broth.

For families: Meat-eaters should try fattah at a restaurant this week - it is the dish of the season. Vegetarians lean on koshari shops; expect some shop closures on the first morning and family-focused crowds at sights.

Abu Simbel temples, Lake Nasser Dates confirmed for 2027

22 Oct 2027 · Dates from Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, checked 30 Oct 2026

The autumn twin of February's spectacle: dawn light enters the Great Temple's sanctum and illuminates the statues, framed by Nubian cultural performances on the lake shore.

For families: October brings milder mornings than February at Abu Simbel - a gentler festival for young children. Stay overnight in Aswan or Abu Simbel village; the pre-dawn convoy from Aswan fills up weeks ahead.

Quick questions

Which Egyptian event is best for families?

The Abu Simbel Sun Festival (22 February and 22 October) is the once-in-a-lifetime one - dawn light entering Ramses II's 3,200-year-old temple, with Nubian music and dance. In Cairo, Sham el-Nessim (3 May 2027) is the friendliest day of the year, when every family picnics in the parks.

When is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival?

Every 22 October and 22 February, per Egypt's Ministry of Tourism - the next ones are 22 February 2027 and 22 October 2027. The alignment happens at dawn, so travellers stay in Aswan or Abu Simbel the night before; book transport early, the convoys fill up.

Is the Cairo International Film Festival open to tourists?

Yes - the 47th edition runs 11-20 November 2026 across Cairo's cinemas and the Opera House. Screenings are affordable, many films are international with subtitles, and the red-carpet evenings downtown are fun to watch even without tickets.

What is Sham el-Nessim?

Egypt's spring festival, celebrated on the Monday after Coptic Easter (3 May 2027) - a tradition so old it predates the pharaohs. Every family picnics outdoors with coloured eggs and salted fish. Visitors are warmly welcomed; Al-Azhar Park in Cairo is the loveliest spot to join in.

Will Ramadan and Eid affect my trip?

In 2027 Ramadan runs roughly from 9 February and Eid el Fitr follows around 10-12 March (moon-sighting dependent). During Ramadan, sights open shorter hours but evenings are magical; at Eid, expect sweets, family crowds and some closures. Eid al-Adha falls around 17-19 May 2027. Plan around both with our month-by-month best-time guide.

What are Egypt's fixed national holidays?

Coptic Christmas (7 January), Revolution Day 25 January, Sinai Liberation Day (25 April), Labour Day (1 May), Sham el-Nessim (spring), 30 June Revolution Day, Revolution Day 23 July and Armed Forces Day (6 October) - plus the moving Islamic holidays. Sights generally stay open on national days; banks and offices close.
