Italy rewards Indian families with ancient Rome, Renaissance Florence, Venetian canals, Amalfi Coast views and food children actually eat. Quick questions

Do Indians need a visa for Italy?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa (visa C) before travel. Complete Italy's online application on the Italian Foreign Ministry's e-application portal, print and sign it, then book a VFS Global appointment in India for documents and biometrics; the Italian embassy and consulates decide. The fee is EUR 90 per adult and EUR 45 per child aged 6 to under 12, paid in INR, plus a VFS service charge. Processing is normally 15 calendar days and can extend to 45, so apply early - up to 6 months ahead. See our Italy visa guide for the full steps.

When is the best time to visit Italy?

Our month-by-month guide, built on ISPRA station data, rates April to June, September and October as recommended: no widespread heat and fewer frost days. July and August are hottest (a median of about 15 days above 30 degrees), January and February coldest, and November the wettest. Rain falls in every month. See the best-time guide for city-level detail.

What money should I carry in Italy?

Italy uses the euro. Major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and larger stores, but carry some small euro notes and coins for small purchases. Tipping close to 10 percent is customary but not compulsory when you are happy with the service. The travel-essentials guide has the full money and forex checklist.

How do I fly to Italy from India?

ITA Airways flies a daily nonstop from Delhi to Rome Fiumicino (about 8.5 to 9 hours), and Air India links Mumbai with Rome. One-stop options via Gulf and European hubs from every major Indian city can cost less but take longer. Our flight-route guides compare timings and airlines in detail.

What should I pack for Italy?

Layers and a waterproof, because rain falls in every month. Add sun protection for the hot July-August weeks, comfortable walking shoes for cobbled old towns, a type C or L plug adapter (220 volts) and any regular medicines in original packs with a prescription. The travel-essentials guide has the season-by-season checklist.
