Italy events guide for families

Content updated 1 Nov 2026 Facts last checked 1 Nov 2026
The short answer

Italy's family calendar runs the year: the Venice Carnival in January-February, open-air opera in Verona's Roman arena all summer, the Palio in Siena on 2 July and 16 August, Ferragosto beach festas on 15 August, the Venice Film Festival in September, and Bolzano's Christmas market to end the year. Most highlights are free to watch; dates sit on the official sites linked below.

January

Venice Carnival

Venice Typical timing

Usually 23 January - 9 February 2027. Dates move with Easter (2026 ran 31 January - 17 February).. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Masks, costumes and free street theatre take over the city: parades in Piazza San Marco, shows in the campi, and the water procession on the Grand Canal. The most photographed fortnight of the Italian year.

For families: Buy children a mask and join in - that is half the fun. Free events happen across the campi, so skip the San Marco crush at peak hours. The ticketed dinner shows are late and adult.

Event website

June

Arena di Verona Opera Festival

Verona Typical timing

Usually 11 June - 11 September 2027 (104th edition), operas on selected evenings from 21:00-21:30.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Open-air opera inside a Roman amphitheatre that seats 13,000: Aida with full spectacle, Carmen, La Traviata and Nabucco under the stars, candles flickering as the overture starts.

For families: The unreserved stone steps (gradinata) are the cheapest way in - bring or hire cushions. Shows end late, so this suits older children and teens better than small ones.

Event website

July

Palio di Siena

Siena Typical timing

Usually Twice each summer on fixed dates: 2 July and 16 August, every year.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Siena's contrade race horses bareback around the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, in a festival of drums, flag-throwers and medieval pageantry that grips the whole city for days.

For families: Standing in the square is free but packed - arrive hours early and keep children close. Balcony and grandstand seats are ticketed and far calmer. The morning trial runs (prove) in the days before are the gentle way to watch.

Event website

August

Ferragosto

Nationwide Typical timing

Usually 15 August every year - Italy's national summer holiday (Assumption Day).. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

The whole country pauses: families head to the sea or the mountains, seaside towns lay on festas, concerts and fireworks, and Rome and Milan empty out.

For families: Many family-run shops and restaurants close for days around the 15th, and beaches are at their fullest. Book restaurants for Ferragosto itself or join a local festa - both need planning.

Event website

Venice Film Festival

Venice (Lido) Typical timing

Usually Late August to early September (2026 ran 2-12 September; 2027 dates not yet announced).. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

The world's oldest film festival turns the Lido into a red-carpet town: premieres at the Palazzo del Cinema, stars arriving by boat, and public screenings alongside the juries.

For families: Public screening tickets sell on the Biennale site and go fast. Star-spotting from outside the red-carpet barriers is free and genuinely fun, and pairs well with a Lido beach day.

November

Bolzano Christmas Market

Bolzano Typical timing

Usually 26 November 2026 - 6 January 2027; closed 25 December.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Italy's most famous Christmas market fills Piazza Walther with wooden chalets, strudel stalls and Alpine lights, ringed by the Dolomites. San Nicolo visits children on 6 December, followed by the spooky Krampus parade.

For families: San Nicolo (6 December, afternoon) brings gifts for children - a lovely moment. The evening Krampus run is loud and genuinely scary for small ones. Wandering the market is free; go at dusk for the lights.

Quick questions

Which Italian festival is best with children?

The Venice Carnival is the easiest win: masks to buy, free street shows in every square, and boats instead of traffic. The Bolzano Christmas market is the other family favourite - lights, strudel and San Nicolo bringing gifts on 6 December. The Palio is thrilling but very crowded, so it suits older children best.

Is the Palio di Siena suitable for families?

It is unforgettable but intense. Piazza del Campo is packed shoulder to shoulder for hours, so with children we suggest the morning trial runs (prove) in the days before the race, or a ticketed balcony seat. The contrada dinners and parades around the city in race week are free, colourful and far gentler.

Do we need tickets for these events?

Mostly no: carnival street shows, the Palio square, Ferragosto festas and the Christmas market are all free. You pay for Verona opera seats, Venice Film Festival screenings, carnival dinner shows and Palio balcony places - book those weeks or months ahead on the official sites linked below.

When are Italian festival dates announced?

The Palio is fixed (2 July and 16 August) and Ferragosto is always 15 August. Venice Carnival moves with Easter and the official site publishes dates about a year ahead. Verona announces its opera season in the autumn before. The Biennale confirms film festival dates closer to the year itself.

What is the quietest time for an Italy trip around events?

Late January (before carnival), November before the Christmas markets open, and the weeks around 15 August in the big cities are the calmest. The busiest stretches are carnival fortnight in Venice, Palio week in Siena, festival season on the Lido, and the Advent weekends in Bolzano.
