The short answer

English works in hotels, airports and most tourist places, but a few Hindi phrases change how India treats you. Learn five well - namaste, dhanyavaad, kitna hua, kam teekha and madad - and keep the rest on this page to show on your phone. Hindi is understood across north and central India; in the south, English plus these phrases covers nearly everything.

Quick questions

Do I need Hindi to travel in India?

No. English works in hotels, airports, tourist sites and most shops in cities. Hindi helps most in markets, autos, small towns and with older people - and even a namaste changes how warmly people respond.

Is Hindi understood everywhere in India?

Across north and central India, yes. In the south (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh) local languages dominate, but English is widely understood and these Hindi phrases still work in tourist areas.

Should I learn the Devanagari script?

No need - learn the sounds. Keep the script on this page to show a driver or shopkeeper your phone when pronunciation fails.

What is the one greeting that always works?

Namaste, with palms together, works everywhere and with everyone - any age, any setting, any time of day.

How do I say I do not eat meat?

Say "main shakahari hoon" (I am vegetarian). For stricter needs: "bina doodh, ghee ya paneer ke" (no milk, ghee or paneer) for vegan, or say "Jain" for no onion, garlic or root vegetables.
