Dhivehi phrases for your Maldives trip

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026
The short answer

English works everywhere in Maldives tourism, so nothing here is compulsory. But a few Dhivehi words open doors on local islands: greet with assalaamu alaikum, thank with shukuriyyaa (a word Indian travellers already know from shukriya), and learn one sentence for vegetarian food. Dhivehi is an Indo-Aryan language related to Sinhala, written right to left in the Thaana script.

Quick questions

Do I need Dhivehi at a Maldives resort?

No. Resorts run entirely in English, and guesthouses, cafes and boat crews on local islands almost always speak English well. Dhivehi phrases are for connection, not survival: a greeting or a thank-you in Dhivehi is always warmly received.

What language do people speak in the Maldives?

Dhivehi (Maldivian), an Indo-Aryan language related to Sinhala in Sri Lanka, written right to left in its own Thaana script. English is widely spoken in tourism, government and business, and is taught in schools.

Is Dhivehi related to Hindi?

Only distantly: both are Indo-Aryan languages, but Dhivehi is closest to Sinhala. Indian travellers get one free gift though - shukuriyyaa (thank you) comes from the same root as shukriya, and Hindi or Urdu films have made words like these familiar on the islands.

Which five phrases should I learn first?

Assalaamu alaikum (hello), shukuriyyaa (thank you), ingireysin vaahaka dhakkan ingeytha? (do you speak English?), aharen maheh nukan (I am a vegetarian), and meethi kihaavarakah? (how much is this?). These five are marked with a star above.

How do I ask for vegetarian food?

Say aharen maheh nukan - I do not eat meat - and add aharen maseh nukan (I do not eat fish) if you avoid fish too. Then ask for baraboa mashuni, the pumpkin version of the national breakfast, or tharukaaree riha, the vegetable curry.
