Philippines: Phrase guide

Written by Cheshta Agarwal Content updated 24 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 24 Oct 2026
The short answer

Filipino, based on Tagalog, is the national language of the Philippines, and English is widely spoken - so you do not need to be fluent. Adding the polite particle po to a phrase smooths every exchange, especially with elders and staff. The phrases below are drawn from Omniglot's Tagalog phrase list, with the five that matter most marked.

Quick questions

Do I need to speak Filipino in the Philippines?

No - English is widely spoken, so plain English works in most tourist situations. A few Filipino phrases remove the guesswork at karinderias (local canteens), markets and in the provinces, and staff appreciate the effort.

What does po mean in Filipino phrases?

Po is a politeness particle. Adding it to a phrase - Salamat po instead of Salamat, Magandang umaga po instead of Magandang umaga - makes it the polite, respectful form, the one to use with elders and staff.

What is a CR?

CR stands for comfort room - the everyday Philippine term for a restroom. Nasaan ang CR? is how you ask where it is.

How do I say I do not eat meat?

Say: Hindi ako kumakain ng karne, manok, isda, o lamang-dagat (I do not eat meat, chicken, fish or seafood). Be specific about every category, since vegetarian can be read as just skipping red meat - our Philippines food guide has the full set of food phrases and watch-outs.
