Korean phrases for your South Korea trip

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026
The short answer

English covers Seoul's tourist zones, so nothing here is compulsory. But a little Korean changes the welcome: greet with annyeonghaseyo, thank with gamsahamnida, and learn the vegetarian sentence before you land. Korean is written in hangul, an alphabet created in the 15th century to be easy to learn - and the sentence order (subject-object-verb) is the same shape as Hindi.

Quick questions

Do I need Korean for a Seoul trip?

No for survival: hotels, tourist sights and many shop staff in Seoul work in English, and subway announcements are multilingual. But markets, taxis and smaller cities have far less English, and even one greeting in Korean changes how people respond.

What language do people speak in South Korea?

Korean (hangugeo), written in hangul - an alphabet designed in the 15th century under King Sejong to be easy to learn. It is not a tonal language, and its word order (subject-object-verb) matches Hindi's sentence shape, which makes basic sentences feel oddly familiar.

Is Korean related to Hindi?

Not by family - Korean stands largely alone, with much imported Chinese vocabulary. The kinship Indian travellers feel is in structure: both put the verb at the end, so "I meat not eat" is a natural word order in both.

Which five phrases should I learn first?

Annyeonghaseyo (hello), gamsahamnida (thank you), yeogie yeong-eoreul hasineun bun gyesimnikka? (does anyone here speak English?), jeoneun chaesikjuuijaimnida (I am a vegetarian), and igeoseun eolmaimnikka? (how much is this?). These five are marked with a star above.

How do I ask for vegetarian food?

Say jeoneun chaesikjuuijaimnida - I am a vegetarian - then jeoneun gogireul meokji anseumnida (I do not eat meat) to be specific. Remember kimchi itself usually contains fish sauce; our South Korea food guide has the full strategy, including temple food.
