Puri is the one Odisha trip where the map lies a little. The famous town is on the coast, but the airport you will fly into is in Bhubaneswar. So every plan is a chain: a flight or train to Bhubaneswar, then a road or rail leg to Puri. Here is how the chains compare.
1. Where you actually land
The Puri district tourism page names Biju Patnaik International Airport at Bhubaneswar as the nearest airport and gives the distance as 60 km. Odisha Tourism says the airport is about 6 km from the Bhubaneswar city centre and that Puri is easily reached from Bhubaneswar by road, with taxi, cab and bus services from the airport.
2. Why distance numbers differ
Official pages do not agree. The Puri district survey report says the town is about 50 km from Bhubaneswar, the district tourism page says 60 km from the airport, and an Odisha Tourism sample itinerary says about 56 km, roughly 2 hours. Different start points explain some of it. Ask your driver for the actual route length and add a margin for traffic.
3. The combinations
- Fly to Bhubaneswar, taxi to Puri: one change, door to hotel. Simple for parents with luggage.
- Fly to Bhubaneswar, bus to Puri: the district page says regular buses run from Bhubaneswar. Cheaper, but you handle luggage twice.
- Train all the way to Puri: the district page calls Puri a major railway junction with direct trains to many cities including Bhubaneswar and New Delhi. Puri railway station is listed at 3 km from the Jagannath temple.
- Train to Bhubaneswar, then road or local train to Puri: useful when your train terminates at Bhubaneswar, which Odisha Tourism lists as a major railhead.
4. How to choose
If your flight lands late, prefer a pre-booked taxi over a bus you cannot confirm. If you are coming from a city with a direct Puri train, that is usually one fewer transfer than flying. Check live schedules on the airline and Indian Railways before you book, since we do not publish timetables.
5. What to confirm
Taxi fare and whether it includes tolls and waiting, the last bus or train for your arrival time, and whether your hotel is near the station or the beach. We quote no fares because we found no official figure.
