Guwahati and Jorhat are both in Assam, so people assume the trip is a quick hop. It is not a hop. It is a full day of planning either way. The Jorhat District administration says the city is well connected by rail, road and air, and lists all three from Guwahati. The real question is which one suits your group.
1. By air: the shortest door-to-door if you fly direct
The district page says Jorhat's airport, also called Rowriah, sits inside the city, so you are not driving an hour after landing. It lists daily flights from Guwahati. That page is a general description, not a timetable. Before you plan around a flight, open the airline's own booking page and confirm the days, timings and baggage allowance for your travel date.
2. By road: about 308 km and about 6 hours on regular buses
The same district page puts Guwahati to Jorhat at about 308 km, covered in about 6 hours by regular state and private buses. Treat six hours as the clean-day figure. Add time for tea stops, a slow stretch or a late start. A private cab gives you control over stops, which matters with parents or children, but ask the driver for the total fare before you leave, not at the end.
3. By train: use it when you want to sleep or avoid airports
Jorhat has its own railway station, and the district page says regular trains link it with Guwahati. Seat availability and train timings change by date, so check IRCTC for your exact day. Book early if your dates fall in the busy winter months. We are not quoting train names or times here because they are easy to get wrong and you should read them live.
4. Combinations that make sense
Fly in, take a cab or train out if you want a different view on the way back. Or take the train in at night and fly back to save a day. The pair that rarely makes sense is a long road trip both ways with a tight flight in the middle. Flights are the quick part. The slow parts are the airport transfers on both ends.
5. Which one for whom
- Parents or knee trouble: a direct flight if available, otherwise a train seat on a lower berth.
- Small budget: bus or train.
- Tea garden day trips planned: a cab gives flexibility, and you can stop on the way.
- Short holiday: fly, and skip the seven-hour day.
Before you book
Our checklist: pick the day you want to arrive in Jorhat; confirm flight days with the airline; check train seats on IRCTC; ask for a total cab price in writing or on WhatsApp; leave a buffer on the day you fly home. This guide uses the Jorhat District (Government of Assam) page checked on 30 October 2026. It does not replace a live timetable.
