The short answer: a comfortable three-day Macau trip costs an Indian couple roughly Rs 45,000-60,000 on the ground, excluding flights, and the number swings mostly on your hotel. Here is the breakdown with official 2026 figures. One Macanese pataca (MOP) is about Rs 11.9 at the October 2026 average (valutafx.com), so Rs 12 per pataca is close enough for mental math - and Hong Kong dollars work everywhere at par, which keeps things simple if you are combining both cities.
Hotels: the one big swing
Macau's Hotel Association publishes average room rates monthly, and they set a realistic anchor for April 2026 (dataplus.macaotourism.gov.mo): 3-star hotels averaged MOP 868 per night (about Rs 10,300), 4-star MOP 1,043 (Rs 12,400), and 5-star MOP 1,493 (Rs 17,800) - that five-star average includes the famous casino palaces, so genuine luxury runs higher while older five-stars dip below. Occupancy runs above 90 percent, so the real budget lever is booking early rather than bargaining. Small guesthouses and two-star pensions on the Peninsula advertise a few hundred patacas below the 3-star average on booking sites. Two nights at the 3-star average: MOP 1,736, about Rs 20,600.
Food: cheaper than you fear
Macau feeds a couple well for MOP 300-500 a day if you eat where locals do: pork chop buns around MOP 50-60, egg tarts MOP 12-15, noodle congee breakfasts MOP 60-80 for two, and food-court dinners under MOP 100 a head in the big resorts. Add MOP 150-300 on a day you want a proper Portuguese dinner - a shared bacalhau and a bottle of vinho verde in Taipa Village. Vegetarians should read our Hong Kong and Macau food notes before relying on resort food courts.
Transport: nearly negligible
Buses are a flat MOP 6, the LRT is MOP 6-12 by distance, and the official taxi meter starts at MOP 21 (dsat.gov.mo) - even a Peninsula-to-Coloane run is roughly MOP 100-120. Free casino shuttles cover the ferry terminals and the big resorts. Budget MOP 50-150 a day for two depending on how often you taxi.
Activities: mostly free
The historic centre, Senado Square, the Ruins viewing garden, Mount Fortress, A-Ma Temple, Coloane village and the Wynn Palace SkyCab are all free. The Macau Museum is MOP 15, free for seniors 65+ and on Tuesdays (macaumuseum.gov.mo). Paid thrills like the Macau Tower decks are the exception - check current prices if they tempt you. MOP 0-100 a day covers most couples.
The totals, per couple per day
Adding it up without averaging away the differences: a budget trip (guesthouse, local food, buses) runs about MOP 1,100-1,400 a day, roughly Rs 13,000-17,000. Comfort (3-star average, mixed dining, some taxis) runs MOP 1,900-2,400, roughly Rs 23,000-28,500. A splurge (5-star average, resort dining) starts around MOP 3,500, about Rs 42,000.
