Seogwipo is the natural day trip from Jeju City: 45-60 minutes south by bus or car, a town built around waterfalls, coastal walking and a working harbour rather than shopping. The realistic version of this day covers the downtown cluster - Cheonjiyeon waterfall, the old town and market, a stretch of Olle Trail, and Jeongbang Falls - and deliberately skips the Jungmun resort strip 20-30 minutes west, which is a separate half-day. Here is the version that actually fits in daylight.
Getting there and back
Two sensible options from Jeju City. The limousine bus 600 runs from the airport corridor to Seogwipo for 5,500 won, taking about 1 hour 40 minutes with all stops - cheap, comfortable, with luggage racks. A taxi or Kakao T covers it in 45-60 minutes for roughly 35,000-45,000 won, worth it for three or four people sharing. By car it is 45-60 minutes via the Jeju-Seogwipo Expressway, or the scenic 1100 Road over Hallasan's flank (which closes in heavy snow). Transport details and the Kakao T setup are in our Jeju arrival and transport guide. For the return, the last buses back toward Jeju City thin out after dinner, so check the evening timetable before committing to a harbour dinner.
09:00 - Cheonjiyeon waterfall first
Start at Cheonjiyeon near its 9 AM opening, before the tour groups build: a shaded forest path leads to a 22-metre fall dropping into a pool, a 30-45 minute loop at an easy pace. It is at its most dramatic after rain. From there, walk ten minutes into the old town for an early lunch at Maeil Olle Market - calmer than Jeju City's Dongmun - where a bowl of galchi-jorim (braised hairtail, the local specialty) or market sashimi runs about 12,000-18,000 won per person.
11:00 - Olle Trail Course 6 to Oedolgae
Seogwipo's best free experience: Olle Trail Course 6 runs from the old town along the coast to Oedolgae, a 20-metre rock pillar standing alone in the sea. The stretch is 5-6 km, mostly flat coastal walking, 1.5-2 hours at a relaxed pace - cliffs, fishing coves, and no booking or fitness requirement beyond comfortable shoes.
13:30 - pick one: Jeongbang Falls or the art streets
Jeongbang Falls is the only waterfall in Asia that drops directly into the ocean - genuinely distinctive, with a stair descent to the rocks (entry 2,000 won, open 09:00-17:50, last entry 17:30; koreatravelatlas checked October 2026). The alternative is the Lee Jung-seop Street gallery district, the rainy-day winner. Do not try both plus everything else; the day works because it stays compact. Vegetarians should read the market notes in our Jeju vegetarian guide before lunch - the harbour restaurants are fish-first, but the market has fruit, greens and kimbap made to order.
17:30 - harbour dinner, then home
End at the working harbour as the fishing fleet comes in. Dinner - abalone porridge, grilled mackerel or another round of galchi - runs 15,000-25,000 won per person depending on the day's catch. jeju-escape prices the full day, food and entries included, at roughly 30,000-45,000 won per person before transport, which lines up with the food figures in our Jeju budget guide.
Weather and the honest fine print
Seogwipo sits in Hallasan's lee, so it catches more mountain cloud than the north coast: waterfalls look better after rain, but the Olle walk is far nicer dry. If the morning looks wet, flip the day - market and art streets first, coast after lunch. And a note for families: this itinerary involves real walking on stone steps at both waterfalls; for a gentler day, Cheonjiyeon plus the market plus the harbour still works.
