Is it realistic? Yes - with an early start
Cherrapunji (Sohra) is 54 km from Shillong, about two to two and a half hours on a good hill road. That makes it one of the easiest big day trips in the Northeast, provided you leave by 7-8 AM and do not try to cram in the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, which is a full-day trek of thousands of steps, not a day-trip stop. Everything else - the big falls, the caves, the viewpoints - fits comfortably.
Your three transport options, honestly priced
- Shared taxi (Sumo): the local workhorse. Leaves from Police Bazaar or Bara Bazar roughly hourly from early morning to late afternoon, Rs 150-250 per person, and departs only when full. Cheap and frequent, but cramped, and the wait to fill up can eat 30-40 minutes.
- Private taxi: Rs 1,200-1,800 one way, about 2-2.5 hours. The right choice for families and anyone who wants to stop at Mawkdok Dympep valley viewpoint and the falls on their own schedule. Book a day ahead in season; negotiate a full-day rate (roughly double the one-way) if the cab waits and brings you back.
- MTC bus: Rs 50-100 but irregular, 3-4 hours with stops. Skip it for a day trip - the time cost kills the plan.
A realistic day-trip schedule
- 7:00 AM: leave Shillong. In a private cab, stop 20 minutes at the Mawkdok Dympep viewpoint - the classic valley panorama is best before the mist thickens.
- 9:00 AM: Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall, ten minutes from the main road. An hour is enough with the viewpoint walks.
- 10:30 AM: Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint, then a quick chai stop in Sohra market.
- 11:30 AM: Mawsmai Cave - the one cave that needs no crawling and takes about 30-45 minutes, lit and walkwayed. Arwah Cave nearby is the add-on if legs are fresh.
- 1:00 PM: lunch in Cherrapunji - simple thalis and Khasi food around the market area.
- 2:30 PM: start back. This buffer matters: you are in Shillong by 5:00-5:30 PM even with a stop, well before dark, when shared taxis dry up and hill roads get tricky.
What people get wrong
- Adding the Double Decker Root Bridge or Rainbow Falls. Both demand the 3,000+ step descent into the valley - a separate full day, ideally with a night in Nongriat. Not on this trip.
- Taking the last shared taxi out of Cherrapunji. They thin out by late afternoon; agree a return time with a sumo driver at lunch or keep your private cab.
- Skipping cash. Entry fees, parking, chai stalls and taxis all run on cash in Sohra.
- Monsoon overconfidence. June to September brings heavy rain and occasional landslides on this road; October to March gives clear skies and safer driving.
Family and senior notes
Every stop on this itinerary except the caves has vehicle-to-viewpoint access of a few minutes' walk on mostly level ground. Nohkalikai's main viewpoint is a short flat path; Mawsmai Cave has a walkway but involves ducking and damp footing - seniors can skip the interior and enjoy the garden outside. The winding road itself is the main complaint generator: if anyone in the family gets car-sick, sit them up front and take the Mawkdok stop slowly.
