Tokyo in March to April: weather trade-offs, crowds and what to book first

March to April is Tokyo's most beautiful and most crowded window. Here is what the weather really does, when the 2026 blossoms peaked, and the tickets that sell out first.

March to April is the window every Tokyo dream is made of, and also the one that punishes late planners hardest. The blossoms are real, the crowds are real, and the hotel bill tells you which one you chose. Here is the honest trade-off map for 2026-27 planning.

The weather, month by month

March is a coat month. Average highs sit at 13 C and lows at 6.2 C, with the odd warm afternoon like March 19 this year, when central Tokyo touched 19.6 C. Mornings and evenings want a light down jacket; afternoons are pleasant walking weather. April turns gentle: average highs of 17.6 C and lows of 10.6 C, less rain than March, and long daylight. A fleece and one light jacket cover most of April.

Cherry blossoms: what actually happened in 2026

The Japan Meteorological Agency tracks a sample Somei-yoshino tree at Yasukuni Shrine. In 2026 it declared first bloom on March 19, five days earlier than average, and full bloom on March 28, three days earlier than average. Peak viewing ran roughly March 27 to April 3, about a week from full bloom before petals fall. Plan for the last week of March as the centre of gravity, and treat any forecast more than a month out as a guess. If you miss the main wave, Shinjuku Gyoen's late varieties keep flowers into mid-April.

The crowd and price trade-off

Early to mid-March is the value play: rooms are easier, queues are shorter, but you get plum blossoms, not cherry. The ten days around full bloom are the most expensive and crowded of Tokyo's year; hotels near Ueno, Shinjuku and the Meguro River go first. Mid-April is the quiet sweet spot: mild weather, thinner crowds, green shoots replacing petals. Then Golden Week hits. In 2026 it runs April 29 to May 6, when domestic travel peaks, trains fill and prices climb again. Either book Golden Week far ahead or land after May 7.

What to book first

Flights three to four months out for sakura-season fares, and a hotel near a Yamanote Line station as soon as dates are fixed. Timed tickets have fixed release rhythms: teamLab Borderless and Planets open about two months ahead with dynamic pricing, the Warner Bros Studio Tour about three months, Ghibli Museum tickets drop on the 10th of each month at 10:00 Japan time for the following month, Shibuya Sky about two weeks out, and Tokyo Skytree 30 days ahead. In sakura week, treat teamLab and Shibuya Sky sunset slots as day-one purchases.

Our pick for Indian travellers

Best balance: arrive around March 22-25, leave by April 2-3, catching first-to-full bloom with beds booked by December. Calm-weather alternative: April 10-25, no blossoms but easy reservations. Avoid April 29 to May 6 unless everything is booked months ahead. Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Is March or April better for a Tokyo trip?

For cherry blossoms, aim for the last week of March - in 2026 the Japan Meteorological Agency declared full bloom on March 28. For thinner crowds and easier hotel bookings, mid-April is the sweet spot. Avoid April 29 to May 6 (Golden Week 2026) unless everything is booked months ahead.

What should I wear in Tokyo in March and April?

March wants layers and a light down jacket: average highs are 13 C and lows 6.2 C, with cold mornings. April is milder at 17.6 C highs and 10.6 C lows; a fleece plus one light jacket covers most days.

Is Golden Week a bad time to visit Tokyo?

Not bad, just busy and pricey. In 2026 Golden Week runs April 29 to May 6, when domestic travel peaks, trains fill and room rates climb. If those are your only dates, book flights, hotels and timed tickets months ahead.
