the short answer

Yes. Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa (Visa C) to visit Austria, for tourism, family visits or business. You book an appointment with VFS Global in India, apply in person and give biometrics; the Austrian Embassy New Delhi assesses every application. The visa costs EUR 90 per adult and EUR 45 per child aged 6-12, paid in INR, plus a VFS service charge. Apply early: the embassy warns of long appointment waits in peak season, and applications are accepted from 6 months up to 15 calendar days before departure.

For senior travellers

Book the VFS appointment as soon as dates are fixed, because the embassy says peak-season waits run long. Keep recent bank statements and proof of ties to India ready; the tourism checklist on the embassy site has the full list. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprints but still need their own application. Check each traveller has a passport with 2 free pages, issued within the last 10 years and valid 3 months beyond the trip.
